I bet. How is he?
That's one of those movies you watch so you can name drop it to your friend that watches and knows movies.

I think Hackman was doing his best to ham but he seems incapable of delivering a crap performance. Delightfully unhinged.
Kill my joke why don't you....

Watched it last night with a buddy who was visibly upset that I haven't seen it.

Really fantastic movie.
I remember seeing this for the first time in my early twenties, a new print. To be honest, I kinda wanted to dislike it, since I was tired of America gangster movies then, and the whole cult of machismo surrounding them. But it turned out to be very good, maybe not the best movie of all time, but good enough to be well rated, yeah. Haven't seen it since, but I did re-watch The Conversation a few months back, and it still holds up.

Megalopolis, though . . . the more I've read about it (not having seen it yet), the less I think I'm gonna like it. Muddled "messterpieces" by auteurs tend to grate as I get older. Have seen too many of them.

Megalopolis was absolute fucking DOGSHIT. I went with a friend and we were laughing a lot through the film.

Utterly fucking terrible film. Some legit fucked up scenes in it, too.

Yeah, I dunno, have to be in a very specific frame of mind in order to sit through something like that ^^^. That it's 138 minutes isn't helping matters!

Kind of amazing. Don't watch it if you want a traditional noir.

I reckon this will underwhelm, but I do fancy giving it a go. Thanks for the rec.

You don't have to go that far, Godfather III is already a shit sandwich. I also take exception to II being some kind of pinnacle. It's just okay - and there is a gaping whole where Brando is meant to be.

Krev wrote: Mon Sep 30, 2024 11:10 am Has anyone seen The Substance yet? I feel like the hype, walkouts, etc. are going to lead to disappointment. I hope I'm wrong.
Yeah, I saw it this weekend. It is nuts. Reminded me a lot of Cronenberg's The Fly and Requiem For A Dream. It is not subtle and not for the squeamish - teeth are pulled, backs are split open, faces smashed, and lots of needles are used, most in extreme close up. It was hard to watch at times. It gets crazy by the end, one scene had me laughing out loud. It is hard to forget, though, and the performances are solid. If you're ok with all of that, I'd recommend it.
A_Man_Who_Tries wrote: Mon Sep 30, 2024 2:25 pmIt's an experience. It's not a great film. I'm glad I saw it, and won't ever have need to see it again.
Good times. Sad times. I enjoyed it and though the third act is indeed chaotic and met expectations I've seen some worse fucked shit in other movies. Desensitization stinks.
kmc wrote: Mon Oct 28, 2024 4:30 pm I watched Azrael and I liked it.
It was aight. At least we got to see the baby unlike in that stuck-up Immaculate. Both left me with questions!

David Mamet would probably love Azrael.

I enjoyed the batshit last 30 minutes of The Substance, but they didn't seem congruous with the Very Obvious Thesis of the first 90.
