A solid state power tube replacement thing from Ben Verellen. I've known this was in the works for a while but really curious to try this out!

A solid-state power tube substitution is not a new idea, but having it be in a robust package that can drop in to an existing amp is cool. Probably a cascode MOSFET configuration and a few bits of support circuitry, plus an amber LED. That tube-shaped metal enclosure and the octal pin connector is likely going to dictate the cost of this thing. The electronics are fairly trivial. Hope it works out.

Why though? Like, let’s say we have a silverface Bassman - why are we doing this?

Remember when Russia invaded Ukraine and there was a period of about 3 months where we thought that there wouldn't be any more tubes and the prices went crazy? I bet that's when this idea was hatched.

Tubes going away is a matter of time. I have no interest in chasing nos tubes on eBay for $200 a pop. As soon as I bought my ampeg sb12 I bought a full re tube for it with no intent on installing them until they are needed... Which could be never. The idea that you wear out your tubes is mostly a marketing plow imo.

Isnt there likely to be an impedance mismatch with a drop-in solid state replacement?

You could theoretically run the MOSFETs in the linear region to increase the output impedance to match that of a tube, but it would require some significant heat-sinking. Maybe that's the reason for the metal bottles.

Some studio specific pedals - one SSL-style buss and another dirtier Level-Loc style FET compressor, plus a preamp. The price is right if they are any good!
Tiptone Audio.
I would like to see more lower-ish priced desktop units like the FMR compressors, small Joemeek comp/eqs, etc. Seems like a niche that could stand to be developed a little further - I think the Black Lion Level-loc reissue and OTO boxes are a hair too expensive to fit in there, though I want those as well, mainly after hearing a credible A Day In The Life echo on some Bim demo once.
