Lately I have found myself becoming obsessed with early human life, the origins of the contemporary homo species and all that. I'm no anthropologist and even less a scientist, I'm just some guy who's interested, you know. How did we get to the state where we could entertain abstract thought? How did language develop? I was reading about the actual history of the voice box in neanderthals today. Crazy shit. It seems that the basic vowel sounds that we use today may have been established 300,000 years ago. And them building all them tools and stuff..... wond'rous. I boggle before the wonders of natural history.

Anyhows, enough of my trite ramblings - what I wanted to know was, can anyone recommend any good books on the subject of the evolution of the human race - preferably ones vaguely comprehensible to a science fuckwit? Just a general history/discussion of theories talking through all the ideas about how language and thought developed would be ideal. Any tips would be muchos appreciated!

Simmo, I'm similarly interested in such things. The evolutionary development of themodern human seems to have been relatively quick. Any reading recommendations would be welcomed...perhaps you need a new thread for this.

The past 10,000 have been the freakiest. At the end of the last Ice Age we were nothing more than hunter-gathers. Scientists now think that the last Ice Age probably ended in a matter of years. There seems to have been a critical mass in our brain power that has snowballed.
