One of my favorite EA records is the one by Wuhling. It sounds like a poppy shellac with a women singing in german. The production reminds me of "Action Park". Great album all the way through. I did a crap/not crap on them and it got no votes. WTF? No one heard them? Fantastic lp that i have turned lots of folks on to!

Favorite Steve recording? Easy: The Frames' "For the Birds" (also an all-time favorite).
MajorEverettMiller!
Thank you for mentioning this record! I had not heard the Frames before! I downloaded "For the birds", and it is very pleasant! I will buy it!
How are their other records?!
-Mama!
the others are not so good, especially prior to For the Birds. "Burn the Maps" is the newest and it has some decent songs on it, but it's also a little cheesy. For the Birds is the jewel.

I like "Burn the Maps", but I see your point.
Yeah, the stuff before "For the Birds"...not so great.

My favorite Weston recording: Hurl: We Are Quiet In This Room. Was this recorded at EA?
I think that record was recorded in Pittsburgh at their practice space. It might have been mixed at EA, but Bob would know for sure.

BadComrade wrote:There was also a band from Michigan called "Morsel" who Steve recorded. I went to see them soon after hearing the album, and I thought "Wow, this new bass player is really interesting". Talking to them after the show, I said this, and they told me that Steve just didn't "do a good job capturing the bass" on their record. I always though that it was funny that they, you know... didn't mention this at all to Steve while they were mixing / tracking the record.
Hey there Bad Comrade,
Weird to find this here. I was the bass player for said group. Of course we said something to Steve. I recently pulled up the 2" reels from the session and found that we had re-recorded the bass on a few tracks to try to get the sound, but in the end, you only have so much time and money. The gained-up crunch stuff sounded just fine....Steve rocks man.

Hey hey, Morsel. I saw you guys once way back in 1998 or so. At the Green Room in Ypsilanti. It was a great show!
Glad you're still together!

Aside from the personal exchange above, this thread seems more or less dead. But since I missed it the first time around, I have to say I was very impressed with Steve's work with Will Oldham. When I first heard Arise, Therefore I thought that's pretty much how I'd like my stuff to sound if I ever get it professionally recorded - which is very unlikely, but a girl can dream, can't she? At least if that ever comes to pass, I have something to use as a reference.
I've honestly don't think I've heard many recording made at EA or by Steve, so it's hard for me to judge. I do like the Shellac, Nina Natasia and other Oldham albums as well, but it was Arise, Therefore that really impressed me. I don't think I had heard anything Steve had recorded since In Utero at the time (and that was around 1999), and I really didn't have any opinion on his work up until then. I'm not good at paying attention to those sort of things. I just know what I like when I hear it.
