Oh man, I find it very difficult to stomach Syd Barrett's solo music, same goes for Marc Bolan. Love Pink Floyd, love T. Rex, hate all the quirky, cutesy, acoustic, hippie shit. Can't stand it. Maybe that's why I don't like Devendra. My good friend drives me insane playing Syd or Marc solo. Syd does this one song about an octopus that can drive me to kill.
See, I think all of those criticisms apply to Marc Bolan's acoustic music, and that's why I have such trouble listening to it, but I don't think they applies to Syd Barrett at all. I love Syd's stuff, for reasons which sometimes bother me. I sometimes wonder if I'm just listening to it because of the "crazy guy" factor and because of the fact that this guy was in Pink Floyd. "Octopus" is not cutesy, or quirky, or hippie shit in any way - it's completely insane, and somehow it's catchy, and it's catchiness only makes it scarier. The way the guy sings the chorus scares me - this guy meant what he was singing, in ways that the rest of us couldn't understand. Because he was insane? Probably, yes. And what does that say about me for listening to it? I don't know.
The fact that Syd Barrett can still inspire this kind of debate in me, and
still have this kind of influence on me (which I'm not at all sure is good) means that his music is far more important to me than Marc Bolan's is, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
Also, "quirky," "cutesy," "acoustic," (at times) and "hippie shit" are all adjectives that can just as easily apply to The Flaming Lips, Randall, and I don't see you being driven to kill by their music.
