gareth, they're right, NYC is overrated. i know it sucks to hear when you haven't been there yet but it is! and it's waaay expensive! you know how everyone always says the states is cheaper etc..? it is except NY. it's like england but more condensed wit hbetter architecture sure...but, i've been other places and preferred them. also, if you do go, go when it's freezing cold, like, too cold to rain. it's very rainy or muggy in general. but snow clouds from the empire state look awesome. why don't you just stop off on the way back for a few days instead? everyone'll be like " you've just been to chicago? i love that place, i wish i still lived there"....come to chicago!!!!!
