Quick echos for Touch of Evil and Full Metal Jacket.
On the X-Men tip: i'll echo how great the opening to that movie is, but i'll raise with the opening to X2, where Nightcrawler storms the White House.
On the Star Wars tip: while Episode III has the same horrible dialogue as Episodes 1 and 2, and the worst final 10 minutes i've seen in the movies in years, the opening rescue sequence totally swept me up into the action and actually had me forgiving all the bad parts of the movie until the "She's lost the will to live" line crashed me back to reality.
Oh, and no mention of the opening to Raiders of the Lost Ark yet? Come on!

I was going to say Betty Blue but then concluded only a deranged sexual deviant would say such a thing.
And, forgive me, but the opening sequences of both Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers sucked me in straight off.
Despite Cate Blanchett talking like a man.

The disorienting opening of Irreversible and the long first acts of Full Metal Jacket and Lost Highway.

When I was very young, I admired the opening of Harold and Maude. I still do, of course, but get less pleasure from fantasizing of scaring my mother.
.... on another note... Irreversible?! Spectacular film, yes, but nobody really enjoys watching that first scene. Much too intense.

It's funny, when I saw the name of the thread I though, "Once Upon a Time in the West." I then see it's the inspiration for the thread. I haven't even read the rest of the thread.
The montage at the start of THX1138 is very cool. It's a Walter Murch sound fest.
Big Lebowski, with Sam Elliot's narration and The Dude buying half and half with a check, then wham, head in a toilet!
