Supposedly they dell and google are pushing ATI for better linux drivers too. With Dell and google behind it all, maybe we can actually see independence from windows.

I just did a job where we ran sound at Redmond/Microsoft for a speech given to a pile of interns by Steve...uh, you know, the CEO of Microsoft.

I think its worth mentioning that, in this pep rally speech for free employees, the subject of open source operating systems as a primary threat to Windows was brought up several times. It was implied that GNU-Linux-based software was an even bigger threat to Windows than that new Google OS...whom they are supposedly suing as well.

All that talk about OSS violating Microsoft patents is just a bunch of hooey.

Microsoft will never bring the matter to court, because then they'd have to reveal what the patents are, and their validity could be challenged. Most software patents are specious and would never stand up to the scrutiny of a court case. Huge software companies seem to just like to have loads of patents on record to use as bargaining chips and to threaten competitors.

What patent is Google supposedly violating? The XMLHttpRequest object? Active X?

The best way linux can make an intrusion into M$ dominance is through businesses, IMO. The more exposure people have in a day-to-day trial basis, the more likely they are to adopt it on their own. Pre-built systems with linux are a must. Right on to Dell for doing that.

Maybe not yet, but per his speech, he implied that it was definitely in the works. Could'a been some sort of 'look strong' tactic, I suppose. Like any other major economic power, they like to hide what's happening behind ominous PR smokescreens...

I'd be very surprised if there weren't a team of lawyers scrambling on it, though. With tentacle-faces, probably about 20 floors below the park all those interns were getting drunk on...

Not sure about this either. There is definitely a lawsuit in the works on that one, though. Per his speech,anyway.

Has anyone got much experience of Ardour or Rosegarden?

I'm looking at scrapping windows and moving to linux, and I reckon the biggest loss will be Cubase SX. Are Ardour or Rosegarden any sort of reasonable substitute?

That's pretty awesome. I'm probably not geeky enough to get real deep into Linux discussions (my contributions to the DND threads aside), but I put ubuntu on my old PC, and am liking it so far. I also need to completely divorce myself from Windows sometime in the near future, cause I want nothing to do with that Vista piece of shit. And Mac's are just too expensive, and sort of annoy me at times with their ease of use, like, by automatically doing things I need done that would take a bit of doing, but doing I know how to do, on a Windows machine. Props to Google and Dell, even though the former is a GOP supporter.

I don't know about any of those, but I use BUZZ all the time.Have been for years. It takes a bit of wrestling with, at the beginning, as it is freeware/'semi open-source' (i.e. the source code was actually lost, but people are reverse-engineering it...check out BUZE). It supports VST's, MIDI recording, etc., and is so user-controllable/modular/flexible that it can be daunting at times. You have to test and tweak it a bit, but that shouldn't be too much of an issue if you are already playing with GNU-Linux.
