well, of course. the thread is about bands that disappointed. i would have thought a band would have to be significantly hyped/promoted in order to have any expectation therefore, as can so often be the case, all the worlds superlatives cannot make up for what is mediocre, therefore if you don't end up loving the hyped to death product, you will be disappointed! and of course, these are the opinions of the people who posted as is yours! mr stating the bleedin obvious!

who doesn't have preconceived notions of anything? your brain would be dead if you didn't! that's not to say those notions can't be disproved it's just that i personally think it's all to easy to like stuff because everyone else does, and everybody is a culprit. i would say guilty but guilty of what? i don't know. that's why i didn't say it..do you stil think i should go into law? i would lose cases merely by contradicting myself all the live long day....i cannot argue on the internets. let's do this in person. can we have a massive debate at the t&g pary? they are more fun than silence..

This was exactly my point. A lot of bands produce moments I will never experience, etc. My expectations fuck me up every time if I let them.

Are you talking about Midwest bands from '81-83 or are you talking about Midwest bands that didn't start an entire movement? Because frankly, while there's always time to innovate something, it's not often you're there at the forefront.

1981-83 Midwest bands, of course. And truth be told, I own the MT Discography CD and listen to it every once in a while. They were good, but they don't move me as much as a lot of other bands of the period. Then again, hardcore was largely about blatant localism, and maybe if I'd seen 'em in a basement ten feet from my face like a bunch of Michigan bands of the day, I might have had a greater appreciation for them.

I think that goes for most of us here, friend.

Why get so upset because somebody doesn't like a band you do?

I'm not upset.
I just can't stand being right all the time and having to point out other people's errors.
Maybe if I wasn't the only one doing all the work around here, it would be a different story.

I can't stop listening to Can or This Heat either. Got that first This Heat on vinyl...cost way too much, but I can't fathom having it any other way. I don't mind things being a bit wanky, though.

Can, a band I think I own more records by than bands I love, always seemed so over hyped. And they themselves seem to be the worst culprits. Holger Czukey drones on so much about all of the ground breaking "electronic" experimentation he would do... and I dunno, I just never really heard much more than jammy rock and roll with the occasional fuzzy wafts of static.. I do love Monster Movie though... more as a pre-punk, yet punky curio. But I do WANT to like them more, hence my possession of their almost complete output. Set me straight if this is possible!

The Wrens- There once was a time where I would give Pitchfork approved bands a chance... and this is one that just seemed so much less worth the hype. They were not bad, but I suppose I was expecting god to speak to me by the coverage and hype mounted upon them.

GBV- I dunno, I guess I never heard the "right" album. Just seemed a decent bar band to my ears.

Oh, and Jeff Buckley... I had a roommate that was obsessed with this guy. He was a bit of a musical savant, my friend, yet perpetually wasted so much friggin' time and talent on endless covers and patterning his performance on the damn Jeff Buckley. I watched some nauseatingly pretentious performance video of Jeff Buckley with him, all aglow with the "passion" of, uh, well being Jeff Buckley.

While I do believe he was very talented, and had a gift for performing, I can't friggin' stand the guy.

Example: When Sonic Youth was described to me, I was expecting something more along the lines of the first Dust Devils album. When I dropped my expectations, the material worked better...

I think I had similar experience... with Velvet Underground.

I think from descriptions I read when I was younger that I had expected them to sound more like slow and dreamy... then I heard some actual songs and was disappointed, based on my preconceptions. Years later when I heard some of the really slow and echoy Mazzy Star songs I thought to myself "that is what I pictured VU were going to sound like!".

Now it seems pretty silly, and I do like some VU songs on their own merits, but at the time it was a disappointment (brought on only by myself)

It is very interesting how you all can have some preconceived notion about the Clash, Sonic Youth, The Fall, the Melvins, etc. that so fucks up your head, that when you actually listen to the band's music it doesn't make you happy. Fucking bizarre.

I had no preconceived notions about the bands I mentioned as to what kind of band they'd be or what style of music they'd be playing. I just hoped that they would be half as good as people claimed they were and, sadly, they were not. These expectations are no different trhan those I have for any artist: When I read/look at/listen to art, I expect it to be good.

Despite owning four of their albums, a bunch of singles, and even seeing them live, I have no choice but to arrive at the conclusion that I was, and remain, immensely disappointed by The Jesus Lizard. I tried, tried again, tried thrice to like this band, and I just don't get it. Sorry.
They're far from crap, and it's difficult to think of a more impressive guitar/bass/drums trio than Denison/Sims/McNeilly-no doubt whatsoever that they're absolutely incredible musicians. It's simply very frustrating to me that a band of this calibre could be lacking in the mysterious quantity of 'greatness'...I hear this unbelievable sound which communicates absolutely nothing to me. I confess that i've never heard 'Goat', would I find it there? 'Liar' was impressive to me, but only like a dragster or a porn star's fucking technique.
