Checked out Qui here in Vancouver last night. I didn't really know what to expect, having only heard the limited material they've got on myspace - which also seems relatively Yow free. Anyway, those songs didn't grab me too much, but I figured it had been about 15 years since last seeing Dave Yow (oh man, was I pissed I missed Scratch Acid in Seattle!) and I would probably regret passing on the show, so I grabbed a couple tickets.

Lozen, a female duo from Tacoma, were the opener for the first 5 or 6 dates here on the West coast. They get an honorable mention for rocking out to a largely indifferent, male audience, and winning over quite a few guys in the process. They reminded me a bit of "The Need"; basically guitar and drums with heavy riffs and screamed vocals. Very Pacific-northwest riot-grrrl esque. Slightly updated, but not by much.

Qui took the stage quickly and Yow paced back and forth, sizing us up, whilst plucking at the collar of his T-shirt. They launched into a song which repeated the chorus "so I slapped her!" and Yow flailed and slapped at the air. So, they wasted no time in offending my wife who was my date for the evening, but she remained a good sport. Matt and the drummer (sorry, don't know his name) were fierce in their own right, and it was immediately obvious that they were a powerhouse with or without Yow as an addition. However, Yow is as entertaining and scary as ever, and offered plenty of entertaining antics. They included a myriad of self-defence poses, plenty of beer guzzling, Roger Daltry mic swings - which resulted in breaking the cable, hiking his pants up to his arm pits, then down again to nearly reveal his package, farting into the mic and then smelling it, and singing into the empty mic clip. Everyone was entertained.

I was curious about a Fender jazz bass on Yow's side of the stage throughout the set, but had to wait a while to see how he'd use it. The encore consisted of an instrumental that was nearly identical to the Jesus Lizard's "Gladiator" with Yow plucking the bass on the B (?) and Cronk doing some Dennison-esque slide work. Yow's mic was nowhere to be seen, but I fully expected (and hoped) that he'd find it and bust into "You should see how she uses...." and give us a rendition of that ol' classic. But, nope. They continued on that riff, built up the volume, and then just stopped. Cool sounding, but somewhat anti-climactic. Like, "you brought the bass along for that"? Anyway, Matt and drummer left the stage, Yow found his mic and bid us farewell with "See you in Boise in 3 days".

It was a pretty good show. You should go.

I think they're playing Echoes - Pink Floyd

Yeah, the band did play some of Echoes...(I couldn't remember which tune from Meddle it was at the time, so thanks for jogging my memory) but Yow sat that one out. Vocally and bass playing-wise. Maybe on some of the other tour dates you'll see some full-on Roger Waters licks from Yow.

I'm sorry, but I don't get how Lozen sound a thing like the Need. The Need sound closer to what Judas Priest, Siouxie and the Banshees the Residents and, I don't know... Sparks?

Other then their gender I don't really get that comparison at all.

I always thought they sounded like early KARP myself, or latter day (more metal Black Flag).

I'd like to say godheadSilo, but rhythmically and anthemically it doesn't make as much sense

If you have to use gender, i'd say perhaps BABES IN TOYLAND?
but that's pretty reductive and perhaps the tiniest bit sexist too.

(full disclosure, I know those girls personally and Replicator has played with them a few times before)
