The Toronto music mag Exclaim! had a blurb about Philly-based band Mazarin being forced to pack it in due to a cease and desist order from a ("lesser" - Exclaim!) band of the same name.

david jones chose (under no legal threat) to be david bowie to not be confused with david jones of the monkees

How about if you have the same name as a band halfway across the country? I've seen several bands on MySpace with the same names, and one of the bands I'm in has a namesake or two. Does anybody really give a fuck?

There used to be a grunge band called Stomp That Pussy that formerly went by STP. I believe that's who you mean. They were not affiliated with Stone Temple Pilots.

Nope, it was Stone Temple Pilots. They used the name right *after* Mighty Joe Young.

what about a "better than" name.
for instance, I've recorded several shitty songs under the moniker "better than hedley".
there is a real shitty nu/emo band from canada called hedley.

The Chicago band Green did this too. They put out an EP called "REM".
Lois Maffeo used to have a band with Pat Maley called "Courtney Love". I saw MOTO open for them once a long long time ago.
A great one was a band made up of Orpheus (x-Plush guy) along with Kris Bataille (first Urge Overkill drummer) and Jim Newberry (Reader photog)... their band was called America UK.
