You don't need all those fucking amps, especially if you're not even using them. Shitty pop-rock bands like Lit toured with something like 8 carvin cabs each for the guitarist AND the bassist. I doubt if they were using more than 1 each.
What a waste of money.
I use a Sunn 2x12 combo that gets loud as fuck. If I want more volume, or more low-end, I hook my little homemade 2x10 cab to it and blast away. Thats all I need.
Lots of big equipment gets a 'big' sound... but J Mascis' set up is just fucking overkill. Faces can be rocked off by sheer volume by many bands, and they don't need 12 amps to do it.
Why big rig?

AS had eight Marshall cabinets mounted in steel frames, four whole stacks, straight and angled cabs. One for each guitarist. They were all empty except for one cabinet.
And they sure sucked. I have to say though, Metallica was pretty awesome that night, in the middle slot.
i saw that tour too. they had at that point had moved metallica to the 'warm down' last slot in the bill, clearly because they were totally superior to the other bands. they were great. and they hung out after the show and talked to us hardcore kids who hung around after the show as hardcore kids did...i still remember that show vividly. and i dont and never did like 'metal' really.

The pleasurable/exciting physical reaction to volume is short-lived though. It ceases to be exhilarating quickly and becomes oppressive and fatiguing.

I don't think so. Black Dice were *just* loud enough to illicit a physical response, and was one of the best shows of my life.

I haven't found that to be the case. Your ears adjust after the first few minutes. And we were talking about playing through loud amps so I don't exactly see myself being oppressed by my own rockin' out. What else would you rather be fatigued by anyway ('cept sex of course) ?

I dunno, this is based on half-remembered lectures at Uni, but I'm pretty sure that the pleasurable physical/chemical reactions to high SPLs are all provably short-lived.
Also, there must presumably be a relation twixt high SPL enjoyment and prediction of the noise; knowing what's coming. Hence being able to tolerate one's own guitar playing or a band one knows...
Probably some reading is in order!
And anyway, it's a digression.

One mans junk is another mans treasure....I generally find any band that plays longer than 20 minutes to be oppressive and fatiguing, no matter what the volume...but that's just me.
