i believe i had a formative teenage year where all that seemed to matter was either Propagandhi or I Spy. i prefer the latter in the long run. and a 3rd i think i'll throw up in the send space thread.

I-Spy were another great band. I really, REALLY love Revenge of the Little Shits. One of my favorite records actually. I had the never-carried-out-and-in-retrospect-thank-god-it-never-worked idea to do an I Spy cover set.

Still, they are eclipsed by Propagandhi. No ifs ands or buts...then again, who can hold a candle to der Proppers?!?

I don't have one.

Skinny Puppy

Big Black/Rapeman/Shellac

Tool

Napalm Death

Ministry

Bad Brains

Black Flag

Codeine

Siege

Discharge

Stooges

Fugazi

And a shitload of others that I love, but wouldn't list them here.

I don't want a list. It kind of cheapens the thread when you turn it into a list of shit to project an image of yourself. Try again.

On second thought...no they couldn't.

You'd get your arse kicked by all of these bands, based only on where they come from. The Cocteaus are from Grangemouth, The Mary Chain are from Glasgow (via East Kilbride) and the Bunnymen are from Liverpool. Tough towns.

In the UK being hip and being hard are not mutually exclusive.

Robin Guthrie is a big guy.

Sweetheart I can assure you that if we are basing this only on where we came from, those poor boys would be in a world of shit.

The Velvet Underground. Yeah, I know it sounds cliche and kinda pussy to say it today, but hearing them at a formative age opened up my ears and my musical imagination in so may ways, and I've yet to hear a live recording of the Velvets that wasn't compelling and carried a distinct personality of its own. No other band means as much to me.

Runners Up: The Ramones, The Stooges, Yo La Tengo, Mission of Burma, Richard Thompson.
