Born Against - Patriotic Battle Hymns (again, aha!)
Totally fucking agree. One of the best hardcore bands ever, if not the best.
Right on. Ten years ago, when was 15, some friends and I would cover a lot of BA songs. For a school talent quest, we played a medley consisting of Nine Years Later/Murder the Sons of Bitches/Mary And Child/Well Fed Fuck and Poland. Afterwards, not a single person said a word to us for the rest of the night. Not even our parents or siblings. A few weeks later we were made to see the school councilor every week for 3 months.
While those records are very nostalgic, I still enjoy them just as much I ever did. They don’t sound dated at all, either.
Have you ever been to the Sam Mcpheeters website? It's great. On it he says:
If you like these (born against) records, I recommend buying one or both of the Articles Of Faith CD reissues, released on Alternative Tentacles. My liner notes are better, but in all other respects AOF were a towering JFK to Born Against's chubby Bill Clinton.
Have you ever heard AOF? I've been meaning to check them out for a while.
HELLO!

63I guess if pressed I could think of ten perfect albums, but most of the records I enjoy the most are not necessarily perfect in any sense. However, here are three albums which I would personally consider to be a holy trinity of pristine and tremulous beauty, art as pure outreach, shared truth and wonder. Stand naked clown:
The Raincoats-Odyshape
Talk Talk-Laughing Stock
Scott Walker-Tilt

That's a fucking awesome story. Me and a few friends covered Minor Threat at a middle school talent show...which is not nearly as cool as a Born Against set.
Sam McPheeters does some great work, and is a super nice fellow. I did an interview with him for a zine I did years ago, and he's actually pretty funny. Wrangler Brutes fucking kick ass too. I miss Vermiform dearly.
I love AoF. Really a great band with some incredible hardcore songs. A three guitar attack that pushed the punched the scene in the ear. While everyone else was playing weak, surface-issue music, AoF was going a helluva lot deeper.
And I've ripped McPheeter's comparison of BA to AoF a bunch of times, using the "towering JFK to chubby Clinton" line often.

Good Lord.

A couple of song titles on this highly overrated record make reference to Coltrane's Ascension and Albert Ayler's New Grass- deeply spiritual records featuring guys playing saxophone really hard. If only they had 1/10th of the spirit (and I don't mean the spirit of Eden).

67Elvis Costello - This Year's Model and Imperial Bedroom
Gang of Four - Entertainment!
Radiohead - Kid A
((The last track is so incredible that it makes me want to cease to exist, vanish into particles and spiral up into heaven with the fading tones. That last wash of sound should, in a proper universe, leave nothing left of the listener but dust and light.))
Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane, Over The Sea
TV On The Radio - Return To Cookie Mountain
Art Ensemble of Chicago - Les Stances A Sophie
Er, that's a couple, I'm going to go do my homework like I'm supposed to.

nina nastasia - on leaving
the fire show - self-titled
resplendent - in a wilderness
form of rocket - lumber
paper chase - god bless your black heart

I can listen to all of these from start to finish, over, and over. oddly enough, a lot of them took numerous listens to grasp. funny how that works.
