This may help put the whole thing in some sort of context and also frame my intentionally inflammatory comment you will find upthread.

If you didn't grow up here, I am sure that the politics of race and (in)justice in the South can be positively baffling. My lovely and talented wife's theatre company dedicates at least one show a year to trying to get people to talk to each other and LISTEN to each other.

Hope it's illuminating.

I'm well aware of the history of the South and it's treatment of Blacks. That doesn't mean Michael Vick gets a pass because of that, or that he is getting more shit than he desrves because he is black. . If Michael Vick was white, I'd feel exactly the same way about the accusations, and the person who is accused.

Enlightening article, thanks for sharing it. Salut Mrs. dontfear for helping perpetuate the dialogue. This quote stuck out to me.

Rev. Joseph Lowery wrote:I do not seek to excuse Vick. Dogfighting is despicable. It smells of sadism, savagery, and reflects the hardening of spiritual arteries. It is cruel and betrays animals that show humans affection and trust, and thus are easily led to a bloody end. But that does not justify the violation of human rights in the principle of presumed innocence. The mad rush to execute Vick has been bloodthirsty itself.

It never occurred to me that this was a racial issue, however I'm not of the race that is perceiving this as unfair persecution. unfortunately, racism and reverse racism continue to thrive. I look forward to the day where actions and behavior are the main basis of evaluating an individual's moral fiber, instead of wealth, status, race, gender, religion and other arbitrary, non-important dividers.

You folks ought to look into recent stories regarding NFL players such as Donte Whitner, Tank Johnson and Dominique Byrd.

Hey, Lawrence Phillips didn't retire that long ago. Neither did Ted Johnson. And isn't Ray Lewis still in the league?

That reminds me -- where's Rae Carruth these days?

And for that matter, how's our old buddy Ron Mexico? Surely you all know Ron Mexico.

And, hell, what about Marcus Vick?

If these names don't mean anything to you, then please follow my links above, which will lead you to the conclusions that: (i) human beings are less important than animals; and (ii) you are news lemmings who are drawn to register your outrage for no other reason than these alleged dogfighting crimes involve a fuckin' NFL quarterback.

What. The. Fuck.

If it's the world of dogfighting that suddenly has all of you down, then you should turn your outrage to real troublemakers, such as the Idaho legislature.

And dog racing? Anyone? Michael Vick and his co-defendants would have to raise their games substantially if they hoped to match the cruelty of the dog racing industry.

By the way, I'm going to feel much better about taking a stand against dogfighting as soon as we dispense with zoos, steak houses, habitat destruction, and cosmetics tests on fluffy little bunnies. What, the lab coat makes you less of a sadist than the QB with the cornrows?

God, I'm begging this forum to stop writing about sports.

Please.

Stop.

instead of zoos, do you mean circuses? this isn't the 20's. zoos aren't very bad. some are very very good. some are they only place an injured animal can recover to the point of being released back into the wild. some work very hard to help species that are negatively affected by the other stuff you mentioned.

and yes, i knew all of those athletes, without your links. but i agree that this is a stupid thread, just saying, lay off of zoos.

I heard about it because he's a famous NFL quarterback. My disgust for it has nothing to do with what his job is. It has to do with how fucking disgusting it is. I know this shit goes on all the time and I think it's sick.

Somehow the outrage others have expressed is invalid because you don't approve or because it does not encompass some full picture that only you can see?

As for "alleged", he is pleading guilty. His "friends" are as well.

What an apologist you are Bradley R. Weissenberger. I expected more from you. I am disappointed.

For the record, by the time I looked at the story, MSNBC had added this correction:

An earlier version of this article quoted from a blog entry purportedly by the Rev. Al Sharpton. MSNBC.com has determined that the blog is a hoax. In July, Sharpton signed a letter with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals condemning dogfighting, saying: “Dogfighting is unacceptable. Hurting animals for human pleasure or gain is despicable. Cruelty is just plain wrong.”
