You should try riding a track bike sometime - it's pretty cool. They do have a little more snap to them, which I assume is because of the simplicity and not having the chain slack riding around a few extra cogs. I don't know why, exactly, but they do.

The weight issue isn't going to be a factor if you're buying a bike to look cool, but for track bikes it's a big deal to get rid of the larger, freewheeling hub in back as well as the gear cluster.

Having said that, I ride with gears because I don't ride on a track and have hills to climb every day. Nothing against fixies or the hipsters who love them, it's just now how I ride.

And I'm glad to hear someone else rides eggbeaters. Brilliantly simple design.

I love my Eggbeaters. When I was shopping for clipless, I read quite a few criticisms of the bronze cleats and how they wore out. I've been riding with them for over four months now, and have not had any problems; and this is riding them every day, walking around on them for a few blocks at a time and such... If I end up having to replace them once or twice a year they're still great pedals, though I did crack my shins once. That hurt like a bitch for a few days.

I'd be curious to try our a track bike. Albeit there's no fucking way I'd ride a fixed gear anything in this city. I've had to slow down as I've built my strength up for fear that doing 25+ MPH in this city traffic is totally unsafe.

I'm not faulting anyone, hipster or not, for riding fixed/single. I just have a hard time buying into any of the justifications other than 'cheap', 'simple' and 'cool'.

Riding on a track is phenomenal. Having ridden road and time trial events, track is a whole new world. It is impossible to comprehend how you're going to stay up high on the banking even though you know you can. And when you're up there and you look down, it's a very different perspective.

I would like a fixed gear bike at some point. I just haven't the room or the extra cash to add another bike. Great buzz though.
dude, where's my life?

And you found that in the trash? Nice.

It's hard for me to say that the wheels look too big without seeing them in person. The tires look very fat, though. 700s are close to 27" and are the road standard, so they're very easy to get. Should make your life easier.

I can't tell from the photos if the rims are damaged, but you might be able to get away with just having them trued. Should be a little cheaper.

Yeah, well I painted it and cleaned it up a little. The rear rim is pretty trashed. It's rusty and has been resprayed chrome. It's a little warped too. It also sits a bit too high for me to ride easily as well.

I'm winning two 700 rims on ebay at the moment. Hopefully they'll do.

I'm not sure what year this frame's from, but there are a lot of different hub widths out there, so you might be rolling the dice on that.

You might want to just take it into the shop. I've always found they're happy to encourage people to work on their own bikes and will help you choose the right parts.

And hey - cheer up.

I'm not too fazed. I'm winnign them pretty cheaply right now.

I'd be going to bike shops on my lunch break but right now in Adelaide the temp has roughly been 30-34 degrees celcius since last week. Not really a good walking around outside temperature.
