At least in the UK, you can send messages of up to 800 characters (but you will be charged 10p or whatever for every 160 characters, so if you were to send an 800 character message you'd be charged for five texts).

My phone has been known to split messages up into two for the recipient, I think it's a factor of which model phone or service you have.

i can't text out much longer than that, i'm a caveman at typing them. but i generally prefer recieving vs a phone call if the info can be conveyed as such.
