Just to endorse some of the bands already mentioned: The Dirty Three, Husker Du, Voivod, This Heat, Johnboy, No Means No.

Jawbreaker were also decent enough.
The Police have not been mentioned yet.

The Victim's Family - though I only have two of their albums.
Reminded of them by No Means No.
I don't know about The Freak Accident - haven't heard their album - saw them live supporting NMN and they certainly looked very Californian.
