Totally agree. That was the first Velvets' album I listened and I love it, but it's a mess. The guy asking for a double pernod is actually Jim Carroll who was with Brigid Polk.

I didn't know King Crimson had Lou Reed as a member...

sorry, couldn't resist.
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

Seriously? That album sounds like a mess to you?

I don't understand.

Also, did you mean the song "Autumn Sweater" or the album it's on?

I think he meant I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One. Still doesn't make much sense to be honest.

I would like to submit Automatic by The Jesus and Mary Chain. Synthesized rhythm section ahoy but some great songs.

Painful I haven't listened to it in a while. And after checking "Big Day Coming" is on that album, I'd like to retract that statement afer seeing them do at least a 11 minute version with Ira pounding on the keys with both hands and one foot. Could have been 14 minutes

Sorry 'bout bringing Autumn Sweater into this conversation

There's plenty of gold to mine if you listen with "GBV ears," though, and "Crackle and Drag" is probably his best solo tune aside from "Waiting for Somebody."

FuzzBob, I would like to know why you would do something like this to me. I would like to know why I now feel the need to see what the hell P. Westerberg has been up to for the last -- shit -- 17 years.

I'm the guy who thought All Shook Down was a decent Replacements record. At the time. Don't Tell a Soul always depressed me, however.

How many solo records has Mr. Westerberg released?

This is a terrible development...

oh, two other albums i can put on this list:

king crimson "starless and bible black", because the songs are pretty unrelated to each other both stylistically and in terms of how they were recorded. the first two songs are kickass rock songs with vocals, then there are instrumental improvisations, some noodly, bluesy or pretty, then there's some balladry, an song that fades out as soon as the first verse starts, and an epic, amazing instrumental composition finale.

cheer accident "introducing lemon". the songs seem to have nothing to do with each other, but there is so much awesome music on this cd and it somehow seems to all flow together.

The Fall make a lot of these. My favorite:

The Fall - Are You Are Missing Winner

The cover says it all.

MES didn't even bother to have this one mastered. Levels are all over the place. The band was hastily put together - no rehearsals, fuck that. There may actually be an Iggy Pop cover on this, but it's so fucked up that nobody can say for sure (the track keeps crossfading into a tape of what sounds like a monkey freaking out). The most commercial track is built around a loop from an old Troggs B-side (with little else).

Despite all of this (or because of it), it ranks in my all-time top 5 of Fall albums.
