ok, john kezdy from the effigies. republican. more or less. he's on the idealistic, 'states' rights and limited federal gov't' side of things as opposed to the evangelical christian, 'i want to control your life' side of things. but still. i'm at least 80% sure he's registered as a republican.

First, the fervent Christians need not be Republican. Granted, I don't think anyone's explicitly said so. But these days, I'm of the opininion that it's good to forcefully herald the Left's long and proud tradition with a revolutionary social message in the Gospels. Mennonites, Liberation Theologians and Dorothy Day all serve as easy examples.

Second, you are wrong, Tim. You don't need to twist the understanding of the term Republican to make a clear argument that the band playing Bush's "Welcome to the White House" party is a Republican band. They've got the event on their website. They gave the dude signed guitars. I don't have to ask the band - they've shown me that they're a Republican band. There are many Republicans who don't like Bush's subsequent record and who think that the Dixie Chicks thing is stupid. But that doesn't meant that they're not Republicans.

Second and a half, I actually think that there's a case of Maria Shriver being a Republican. Maybe I'm too inclined to see guilt by association.

(Third, I actually don't think that Tim is really wrong, but I want to have baited him enough for a response. As I write this, he's at exactly 50% over 666. And I want to see him hit 4 digits.)

I find it hard to believe that Sun Ra ever voted for a white person. What, specifically, is his alleged Republicanism being based upon? I read 'Space Is the Place,' and I don't remember anything like that.

Skynyrd's drummer, Artimus Pyle, was a Vietnam vet and a vegetarian; I can almost guarantee you that he isn't a Republican. And as longhairs in Florida, the boys were totally harrassed by the redneck populace. If you all are just assuming they're Republicans because they're from the South, fuck you. Where are the last three Democratic presidents from? Arkansas, Georgia, Texas. Where's John Edwards from? There's more democratic, populist spirit and environmental awareness in Skynyrd's music than most anyone's but the folkies. They don't need Mr. Young telling them to vote for Reagan.
