Guilty Pleasures II: Good Songs by Godawful Bands

I can think of a million examples but this one cropped up recently so it's fresh in my mind.

There is a markedly terrible guitar pop band from Ireland called Ash. They have come in and out of popularity over the years but their first album was sometime in the early 90s, when the trio were still teenagers. They had about four annoying Pixies/Weezer hybrid singles from their first album and I remember hearing them all non-stop during my childhood. Obviously, I had long ago dismissed them as CRAP.

Then while I was at a party months ago a song came on the stereo which I immediately thought might be Pavement. It had that kind of slacker vibe to it with it's laconic riffing and couldn't care less vocals. I was nodding along slightly inebriated when someone mentioned it was actually a song called 'Goldfinger' by Ash. I've just downloaded the song and it really is a reasonable slab of pop. It's head and shoulders over the shit you hear in the UK charts these days that's for sure. Dreadful video can be found here if for some reason you care.

"I'm Gonna Keep On Lovin' You" by REO Speedwagon.

I fucking love this song.

I have learned to play a cover of it, that (like every other cover I have don so far) will never be heard by anyone else. It is an amazing tune.

The rest of REO? I don't think I can remember another song by them. Therefore the rest of their oeuvre must be crap-ola.

Just to check, is this the one that meekly starts

or am I confusing two slices of Speedwagon gold?

The chorus does rule, as does the fact that the drummer had one of those boom vocal mikes that would swing away to allow him to do some serious "impassioned nodding and gurning"

Big minus for the overwrought "I don't believe" bit, though. Get a grip, son!

I'm ashamed to say that I quite like that 'I Alone' song by Live. Everything I know of these people is bad, but I once played that song twice in a row at a party in Germany, because I enjoyed it and they let me.

I like the song 'Give Me A Little More Time' by Gabrielle, the bong-eyed 'soul' songstress. I think it is a great song.

I like the song 'Yes' by Mcalmont and Butler for the same reasons as the Gabrielle song.

I fucking love the song 'Tell me A Story' by Samiam, though everything else I've heard by them bores me.

That'll do for now, I think.

Yes, including Sussudio.
Yes, including Land of Confusion.
Yes, including Easy Lover.
Yes, including Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now).
Yes, including Take Me Home.

Hmmm, interesting... I personally would have dumped all over those, but then I'd say that his one 'Not Crap' song for me is 'I Don't Care Anymore'.

I do like this Phil Collins, the one who seems capable of being a bit pissed off, and actually expressing it well in the vibe of a song. I don't care for the happy-go-lucky dude singing 'Sussudio', 'Easy Lover', etc.

Diff'rent Strokes, indeed!

No, that's the other song they wrote, called "Take It On The Run" or something like that.

Someone shoot me for knowing that, please.
