Never heard a note of their music, no idea what it sounds like, but I just found out (last night, while watching a documentary about the sexual revolution in the US) who he was. Weird that it's an actual person's name. He was murdered for not hating fags. WTF?!?!

I'd say get Courtesy or My Love Is Higher first, or Special Wishes if you're not into music that is deliberately difficult and irritating. Once you've got and absorbed the first two, get the Pleaser.

Somehow I think the name is perfect for the band. Music like this doesn't seem so unlikely or improbable now, but eight years ago the very existence of this band was such a headfuck for me. I completely fell in love with the way that the first two albums were so obtuse, and the Pleaser, which is musically quite straightforward, seemed so difficult in the context of those records. I've got a feeling that the patience they display on those first two albums is gone, they don't make you wait for a payoff any more, but Special Wishes and the new one are still welcome additions.

Going tonight, I think.

They're playing with Clouds, who I've heard are loads of fun live.

The new record is a real treat. My favorite 2008 release so far.

The singles compilation was the first one I had. I'd say it's a great place to start.

I can't believe I missed the Atlanta show. I knew they were playing sometime this month, but I completely forgot. And I can't catch the Athens one either because I just found out it's my friend's birthday. Curses!

Their completely adorable drummer sold me some of their CD's, and seemed to be incredibly pleased that

a) I was buying them before they played
b) I was a girl buying their records

Ha! The person that introduced me to this band is a girl, and when I posted about how much I was getting into them on my lj, the first person to reply was a girl.

These Harvey Milks, they do not so much understand the demographics of their fanbase.
