Both are great.I've always wondered about that MD2 though.

The MD2 has a pod that changes the sensitivity of the capsule and it might sound a tad more open. I have used both of them as a pair for drum overheads and I bet that there are some vintage KM84s that sound further apart from each other than my MD1 and MD2. I have tried a lot of different 12AX7 and 12AY7 tubes in them which had a bigger influence on the sound than the different capsules.

I bought most of my microphones 15-20 years ago. I was recording quite a lot of music back then and was working as a freelance and house engineer in a local studio. Today I have a well paid teaching job and managed to keep most of them. There are definitely more than I need and I might get rid of some of them to buy other recording equipment.AKG D112, C 451 EB with CK1 + CK2 (2 x)Audio Technica AT 4033 (2x), AT 4047 (2 x), AT4050, AT 4051 (2 x) cardioid + omni capsules Beyerdynamic M88, M130, M160 (2x), M260 (2x) M500, M201, M380Coles 4038 (2x)Crown GLM 100Electro Voice N/D 868, N/D 408Groove Tubes MD1, MD2Oktava MK-012 (4x) MSP6 + 2 MK-102 capsulesShure SM7B, SM57, SM98, KSM137RCA 74-B JrRevox M3500Royer R 101Sennheiser MD 421, MD441, MD221, MD21T Bone RB500 (2x) modded with Lundahl transformers, RM700The mics I use most often:M 201/Revox 3500: SnareM 88: vocals and kick drum4038s: drum overhead, I always try them on guitars, but 7 of 10 times the amp is too loudMK-012: Toms, Room, guitarsBeyer M260 (modded by Steve Sank): I love this mic for guitar ampsMD 441: guitarsAT 4047: bass cab, vocals, kickM160/M130 in MS in front of drum kitsM380: bass cabs C451EB: acoustic guitarsGLM 100: taped close to the vocal mic. I compress the main vocal mic and send the uncompressed GLM signal 100% wet into a reverb. The louder the singer gets, the more room is in the mix.I always wanted a RE/PL 20 and might sell some of the SD condensers to pay for it.

Anyone have some thoughts on tom mics? For home recording I'm using ATM450s (side address condenser) because I have a bunch and they work ok. But I kinda want to try some dumb dynamic mics with a little more thud happening. Any go-tos or proven winners out there y'all are using? My general taste in drum sound is to get the bulk from OH and beef up where needed with close mics, if that helps. Anything that sounds like a more contemporary version of Doug Clifford would be in the ballpark I think.

Although I find myself using TWO pads to get anywhere close to the drum (I have two pair). This is interesting and explains why my 012s crunch out when I put them on toms. I thought I had an issue with the mics
