Inconsistent advice around mask-wearing died in all but the most arse-frontward outposts of officialdom by the time the first wave had settled in. Dumbfounded that efficacy is even considered questionable, FFS.

That study's conclusion wrote:The recommendation to wear surgical masks to supplement other public health measures did not reduce the SARS-CoV-2 infection rate among wearers by more than 50% in a community with modest infection rates, some degree of social distancing, and uncommon general mask use.
(emphasis mine)
Deeper in that study, the discussion section wrote:The findings, however, should not be used to conclude that a recommendation for everyone to wear masks in the community would not be effective in reducing SARS-CoV-2 infections, because the trial did not test the role of masks in source control of SARS-CoV-2 infection.
The mask's primary purpose is not to protect the wearer. It is to protect
others. It is an act of altruism, not defense. It may well be a failing of messaging from the WHO/health authorities that have made it so hard to communicate this clearly. It's tempting to draw some conclusions about what kind of thinking and priorities our social systems encourage, though.

I guess I missed the part of stats where we should expect viruses to be outlying, self correcting events. Huh. Because that’s the only way to make any argument against intervention.

The most frustrating thing about all of this is that I have young kids that cannot get vaxxed. Every time we plan something like a trip or gathering we have to keep that at the front of our strategy. It's frustrating to see people that can't step outside of themselves to protect their kids. We have parents of our kids friends in our circle that are so tone deaf and selfish that our relationships are fading away.
California, where I live, is mandating teachers to be vaxxed this school year. I feel more that we should mandate that the parents of school children be vaxxed! Kids that bring it to school are bringing it from home most likely from their parents being out and about.

Vaccinating the military is fine. They willingly gave up their bodily autonomy.
But firing a civilian over this is not right.
I am glad Justice Barrett and I are on opposite sides here.
If parents must get a vaccine to send their kids to school then just call it forced vaccination. That’s what we’re headed towards.
I don’t want to go through this every year.

It isn't gene editing, but it is gene therapy. There is a publicity campaign to downplay how novel and untested mRNA therapies are.
It is, and there isn't a precedent for mass use of mRNA therapies, nor are the various complex side effects particularlt well known. We could call this a mass experiment. Much will be learned, no doubt.
When people develop genetic defects, such as in the case of some types of cancer, or for example cystic fibrosis, Moderna propose that an mRNA drug would enable the body to produce the missing protein or enzyme which is insufficient or corrupted from the patient's own genetic material, stored as DNA.
This technology will enable stuff like life extension and the palliative management and remission of a lot of degenerative and hereditary diseases.
The examples you're listing are better examples of gene therapy. The use of the CRISPR technology is central to gene therapy. As I think you're indicating, we could be getting a bit semantic (but aren't all arguments semantic?) but gene therapy is intended to make up for genetic deficiencies. That doesn't cover immunity to a virus. Our immune systems clear out the new cells derived from the mRNA in the vaccine. In gene therapy that would be a failure.

I had Covid March 2020, fucking scary. I didn’t get that sick but I’m super health, barely drink, good diet, walk 10km everyday to and from work… but two weeks after the initial infection passed I got pretty unpleasant shortness of breath, to the point I was doing oxygenation exercises four times a day. Luckily a chest X-ray showed no damage but it was very mild pneumonia…
I got my Moderna in London the day I could and my second as soon as possible after that.
I simply don’t understand anti vaxxers. Vaccination is one of the greatest achievements in human history.

I had to get a tetanus shot before I started 6th grade. It's common practice. Also I didn't whine like a like wienerhead baby about it.
