I know...in the scheme of things it probably sucks, but I've only ever used it as an A/D converter to get mixes from the 8 track onto the computer or to digitize cassettes. I use Audacity and keep things absurdly simple. The M Audio has pretty much everything I need and not much I don't, but I do get dropouts sometimes and have to redo the transfer. I was looking at some Universal Audio stuff that looked nice and simple like the Volt 276, but then saw it boasts to make your recording sound "vintage" at the touch of a button and that it has a dumb built in single button compressor. No thanks. The SSL2 looked cool too, but it has a 4K button that does...something. I don't want crappy podcaster features. Just something really basic and simple with good conversion. I know people here use the Focusrite Scarlet, but is that going to be any different that what I'm already using? Also, I see the new version (2i2) has an "air" button which is more signal processing nonsense. I know I could just not use these built in effects, but I don't want them in the first place.

Is it worth changing horses if what I've got is working for me with the occasional hiccup?
as long as you're just transferring stuff you can use the highest Buffer size/latency possible, if that's what causes the drop outs.

If you can find a used RME Fireface 800 or 802, I've never had any issues with them in the last 10 years!

FWIW, I'm also using two RME FF800 units in parallel on an M1 mac with no issues.
That said, if the idea of a button that no one is making you press elicits this much outrage, I shudder to think of the reaction that the notion of two dongles chained together would elicit.

Haha...it's not outrage at all, it's just that the things I was finding when looking for a relatively inexpensive, straightforward interface were basically built for one trick signal processing as the key feature. Which is not what I want. In the same way that I never went for a modeling amp or a mixer with a bunch of built in effects. I'd prefer to be the one making changes to the source and not just press a magic button, let alone a magic button that thousands of other people are utilizing.

Ultimately, I'm gonna keep what I've got for the time being. If I did go with something new, the Tascam US-2x2 looks like it would be the thing.
