So it is I guess
In a musical sense, calling something or someone "suburban" would imply it is/they are middle-of-the-road and/or mainstream. Possibly boring. Possibly mediocre. Not necessarily an insult (it's more of a descriptor), but if someone thinks of their music as unique and they are called "suburban", they would probably feel insulted.
Somewhat a tangent, but there's also this:

I think music like Third Eye Blind and Smash Mouth fell squarely in the suburbs. There was a little crossover with FNM, i.e., "Epic," but not to a great extent.

Geordie was asked to play guitar on FNM's next album. He recorded some tracks in a studio, when Paul Raven decided to drop in. The two of them got drunk one night and were listening to playbacks and laughing at the music.
That's Paul Raven of Snap Your Finger, Snap Your Neck and late period Ministry fame?
This sounds like what a Disney Pre-teen comedy/drama television show thinks Heavy Metal sounds like. Like, in the scene where Hannah Montana drinks too many Red Bulls at the battle of the bands and some older drummer is going to try to put his hand on her leg... this is what is playing in his van. This music is THAT edgy.

Faith No More are one of the greatest bands to ever exist.
Angel Dust is my favorite album of all time. A masterpiece.
Sol Invictus, from 2015, is low-key amazing. I listen to it more often than some of their original run.
The fact that they are so polarizing only endears them to me more. Hate them all you want. They're the best. Fuck you.

Put me in the very small camp of people who only like The Real Thing. It came out at a pivotal moment for me and music, but I was already into harder more underground stuff by the time I heard their later albums and they had too much studio sheen for my tastes.

You aren't wrong. I think the metal tracks on The Real Thing are more authentic; "Surprise, You're Dead!" is a legit banger that I think also takes a cheeky jab at metal idioms that approach the "preteen comedy metal" you mentioned, and their cover of "War Pigs" is as good as the original.
