I like the first one.
I like "DJed" & "Dear Grandma and Grandpa" off of the second one.
I liked TNT somewhat.
I liked the first song off of Standards (the rest didn't do it for me).
It's All Around You sounded bland to me.
Not crap.
Band: Tortoise
63I never bought any of their records.
I saw them on a boat in Bristol where they tore the place down. They introed with a bunch of John Coltrane mixed in with Drum n Bass records then came out with double drummers and kept up until they ran out of tunes to play, multiple encores. This was not long after their first or second record came out, Pajo was in the band at this point (although I didn't know he was the Slint guy at that time). Great show.
I have just remembered when I went off them. I saw them in a cavernous venue off Brick Lane, it was sweaty, overpacked with people who didn't seem there to see the band. My abiding memory of the evening was that there was a man in an astronaut suit dispensing free promotional beer from his silver jetpack. Lots of marimbas, Jeff Parker's noodling, no energy at all, the kind of stuff that sounded like it should have been played at the Barbican. Cost me 10 quid as well.

64Gramsci's right about that gig - it was deeply awesome. (Clark, supporting, was good too, but Tortoise were something else.)
Anyway, absolutely not crap. The day that the eighteen-year-old me bought TNT (and Boards of Canada's Music has the Right..., which I might get less support on) was a good day. Actually, thanks to this thread, I'm listening to Djed right now...
