Oooh.

Are they still good live? I think they have made some of the best pop records that hardly anyone (in the US, at least) has heard. I'm not talking about Bandwagonesque, I'm talking about their more recent ones. Some real gems there.

The most current album that I've heard is "Grand Prix". How was the album that they did with Jad Fair?

They are honestly fucking excellent.

Photos from tonight's gig.

A friend called from the Knitting Factory in NYC. "There's this guy here, doing electronic stuff, and he looks kind of like you. And he's terrible. He's been doing the same two chords for forty minutes. He's harmonically retarded. You need to hop a plane right now and come and kick him off the stage." After we hung up, I looked it up--it's Sonic Boom's Spectrum project.

Found out today that the wedding I am obligated to go to in March is not only in Lawng Guyland, but also an Orthodox Jewish wedding.

The kind where men and women are separated in temple, and possibly during the reception. How am I supposed to find a husband if I can't sit next to him? I assume that's why I am invited in the first place, because everyone in my family is concerned that I'm going to die alone, in an apartment full of cameras and records, with a fridge full of film and bottles of Starbucks Frappucinos.

Of course, this means that the two mindblowingly excellent dresses I have that I have been dying for the "right" occasion to wear are instantly inappropriate, since they are sleeveless. I'm going to call the bride to be tomorrow and ask her just to make sure, but I really don't want to wear my second or third choice. Goddammit I want to wear that Proenza Schouler dress to something this year. I angsted enough about its purchase a year ago too much to let it hang in the closet.

I hope you aren't looking like Sonic lately, since he looks even more sepulchral than Tom Verlaine. And I know you've seen Verlaine.

Nah, I'm healthy, but pretty tired-looking lately. I think it's more of a vague isomorphism than striking resemblance...though Sonic's only a little older than I am.

I do like the idea of stalking Spectrum shows and taking over, though.

Those of you still up and have nothing to do....Sumo will start streaming live from Tokyo within the next half hour. Today is the final day of the tournaments and the last match is between the two Yokozuna. Their records are tied coming into today, so it's winner take all match for the tournament. Here is the link. It will all be over at around 3:30am-4:00am Eastern.

My old bandmate and friend Gram was in town for a few days this week. He plays guitar in Rogue Wave. He flew here a couple days ahead of the rest of the band so that he and I could goof off and do some recording. Their show was yesterday. The opening band Midnight Movies got their tour itinerary screwed up and as of 8 pm it looked like they weren't gonna make it, so Rogue Wave asked if my band wanted to open for them. In an hour and a half. My band that just started practicing again recently after a 4 year hiatus, and still wasn't quite ready to get on stage. We scrambled around trying to find a babysitter (my wife is in the band too) and were just about to tell them we would do it when the other band showed up. I was glad, actually. We don't have our shit together right now and Rogue Wave ended up selling out the Parish. There were probably 500 people there. I'd rather keep our first Austin show in 5 years a little more low key than that. Or at least have a couple more hours notice.

It's the end of a crappy day spent trying to do school work, and having little to show for it. Have a headache, feel stupid, and would rather be watching documentary films alone with some good food and a bottle of wine. Instead, I'm browsing the internet, drinking cognac and eating a grilled cheese sandwich. Thankfully I'll be sleeping soon.
