It's my last day of work today for almost a month...

Someone came over to my desk and started talking work at me - I really just wanted to say "what do I care?". I didn't, I just waited till he was done and smiled. Really... What do I care? Holiday. I feel like I'm on valium or something.

See y'all in a month.

Seriously, where is my snow?

Half of the UK is snowed in. I live in Scotland. I want some fucking white stuff. Goddamn it.

In work we all stood up from our desks to look at the smoke in the sky. Turned out it was the snow travelling toward us from across the horizon. In a minute the weather went from calm to fucking crazy and the sky went from sunny to almost pitch black.

Someone at work was on the phone to a friend in Leicester and they said the exact same thing had happened to them half an hour earlier. Someone else was talking to her husband in a different part of Brum who said it was fine there. As they were talking he related that a snowstorm had just appeared from nowhere.

About half an hour later it had gone.

It sounds like some kind of cartoonish storm zipping around the country. It may get to you yet Tommy. Give it twenty minutes or so.

i have to make arrangements for a focus group at which we will provide lunch. someone here recommended a very good thai restaurant. my new short boss responded with:

"I’d be careful about anything too exotic (or spicy) and I would rather not do anything Asian. I have a good sushi story, I’ll tell you guys sometime."

minutes later he walked into my office to tell me the sushi story. seems he used to be involved with an organization that used to meet for lunch. the "big boss" of said organization loved sushi and would usually arrange to have the meetings at a sushi joint. finally one day my new short boss said "you know, S______, no more sushi. people are going to think that i'm the one (if you will recall he's filipino) who always wants to eat at sushi restaurants."

I visited an elderly bloke at home today who started telling me about when he and his brothers and sisters' were evacuated from London during WWII. I thought I was going to burst out crying. He told it so matter of factly.

There were five siblings, his youngest brother was five years old. He remembers his mum telling him to look after this youngest brother as they were sent away to the English countryside, to a new family and new school. On the train there, they held hands all the way.

If I didn't have three children of my own, quite frankly I wouldn't have given his story a second thought. If you don't have children, maybe it won't mean much to you either. But as soon as he put the pictures in my head with the old black and white photos that he had, all I could see was my own daughter's face going through that experience. As a father, his story really hit me.

Over the next decade or so, this generation will be gone. I'm fucking glad to have been around when they still are, just to get gems like this now and again.

I never contribute to this thread, but this one hit me hard.

My wife's grandfather died yesterday I was thinking along the same lines when I heard about his life.
Farmer, Factory Worker, Dentist, Commercial Fisherman, Soldier in 2 wars, Raised 12 kids and countless grandkids.

I sit around and screw around on a computer all day, then go home and eat hamburgers.
