Lets not fool ourselves, this is the least surprising thing ever. Saudi Arabia was born entirely out of the playbook of Colonial Britsh statecraft fuckery and America's Standard Oil. A couple of years of faux indignation isn't going to upend a century of profitability and mutually assured regional dominance.

He wasn't a journalist, he was a decades long political liability who had worked for Saudi Intelligence and was embedded with Bin Laden when they were all happily fighting the commies in Afghanistan but then started working for the other side. And ultimately it's just another imperialist power eliminating their enemies with impunity. If I try on my tinfoil hat, I wouldn't even be shocked if the US conveniently looked the other way as a personal favor.

I'm just being fatalistic...sadly I don't think state sanctioned assassinations and staged coups are going to go away in my lifetime, but that shouldn't deter you from objecting when anybody does it. My thought was only to point out that the West has always had a vested interest in maintaining a positive relationship with Saudi Arabia.
