i agree it's a totally safe record but despite the lack of noise etc.. i'm merely judging it by whether i enjoy the listening experience, not whether it means something or if it moves me.

by being able to write this records though, it does show they can write pop hooks which is just as valid as being able to write a fucked up experimental piece that lasts. writing hooks is a talent and hooks is what grabs ya!

i just happen to have a real thing for their laid back california (if neil young were young these days) kind of approach. like, i'm a sucker for the 'middle 8' in pacific coast highway song you know?

Oh aye, it's a good pop record. But i just want to listen to noise/feedback wigouts when i listen to Sonic Youth. I suppose i just want them to always be in that "vintage era".

In fairness, i have also only listened to the album once.

partly agreed. but i think they can (and should) write better and fresher hooks. like the build up section in and rocking out in "rain on tin". i was listening to it 4 years ago my mind was in "fuck yeah" mode. there is a similar part in one of rather ripped tracks, and it is well written and all but when i'm listening to i;m in "wait, i heard this one before" mode. of course, there are tons of bands who change their music a lot less than SY and i don't care as long as i'm enjoying them. but with sonic youth my expectaions are higher, that's all.

See that's your problem. The only time we use the radio is for baseball games.

A product for sure. I wish they'd stop with all the products. Kid's gotta eat
right?

Hey you. Yeah, the one sitting there without children. Yeah, you bozo! Pay
attention! If you have kids you too can go from guitar heros to product-makers!
When you do, remind yourself to stop at guitar hero.

Last week I abruptly started to hate the section in the middle of "Reena" where they stop playing a really cool melodic rock song and instead do That Sonic Youth Thing for 24 seconds, and then go back to the song.

If they meant it as a joke, I am prepared to be merciful.

Can Kim actually sing "Reena"? Aside from the aforementioned bit I think it's terrific, but I have doubts about the replicability of the vocal in a live setting.
