More often than not I've been getting excellent results from a Sm57 on the rack tom.

I second the Audio Technica ATM-25's, not exactly a flat frequency response with a slight bump at 80Hz, and a bigger slope that rises from @1-3 Khz, troughs out and notches at @4.5Khzm slightly rises at 5Khz and peaks at 10Khz before dropping off. You also get a good amount of proximity effect from them which is good for a nice fat drum sound. --Apparently a few people like them for kick mics as well, but I think it's a poor choice for kick.
