Southern Man don't need you around, anyhow!

We have what I'm sure are collard greens here in Kyp-land. We call them Λαχανα. I like 'em with black eyed or broad beans, thinly sliced onion, olive oil and lemon juice.

Yeah, that's basically it. Fuck every last mulleted Skynyrd fan and the humid, impoverished shit-hole states from whence they lecture the rest of us on how best to live our lives.

I know I've said this many times before. For those of you who don't know: I live in East Tennessee. Every county in East Tennessee (with the exception of Sullivan (a county we can still do without)) voted to stay with the Union. The "mountain people" didn't like slavery at all. It wouldn't make sense to have slaves in an area like this, geographically. Most East Tennesseeans rebelled against "the rebels". The Confederacy occupied the East- Fearful that the people would revolt, form their own state, and join The Union.

I always school rednecks on this when they talk about their "heritage", as well.

There are many things I am not proud of. There are also many things I am indifferent about.

I also know that none of these things are directly related to me.

I just think that is an interesting piece of history and I'm proud of my ancestors for it.

I can be proud of myself for my own actions and I have never really understood too much localized pride.

My pal Chris is reading this book about the civil war, and read to me the following children's jump-rope rhyme from the era. I'll let you guess what side of the Stuckeys-Waffle House line it came from:

Abraham Lincoln, king of the Jews
pinchback trousers and cowbelly shoes

Here's one thing I like about Dixie: the reconstruction reminders of what a weird, pluralist place the US is.

If you visit Alabama, head over to its capital Montgomery and drop by the state capitol building. Notice a big statue at the front door - of Jefferson Davis (President of the Confederacy during the Civil War.) The stars and bars flap away on the state flag above.

Consider for a moment how few monuments commemorating Chechen separatists will ever be erected in Russia, or what the chances are of Tutsis unveiling statues comemorating Hutus in Rwanda. Or how many monuments to Thieu stand in Vietnam or Chiang Kai-Shek in China or the Shah in Iran.

On the minus side, I'd like to announce to the south that I'm on to you about those shitty boiled peanuts you sell to yankees on the roadside. Man, what the fuck.

I asked my southern friend about that once...her response (in her typical Southern crazy lady style) was "You put them in a can of Pepsi and shut the fuck up."

Okra. It originated in Africa, but they fried it down South.
