Qui has been playing that (excellent!) cover of Echoes since before Yow ever played in the band, and I dig it a lot.
At least on the most recent SF show (and the last two shows we played), David did kind of a 3 part harmony thing on there too, which was pretty damn rad.
As for the Jesus Lizard songs:
On the first Yow enabled Qui tour, they USED to play a cover of Glamorous, but that just encouraged the number of jackasses who haven't bought a record in 12 years or so to yell out Jesus Lizard songs, instead of placating them.
It's just like the folks who yell out for Big Black songs at Shellac shows or KARP songs at Big Business shows.
Those are great songs that live in a time period that is not now, and should be enjoyed ON RECORD. It's awkward and disrespectful to the other players as well.
Don't expect to hear stuff from David's old bands, although Matt and Paul are (duh! Obviously) fans they were an entity before Mr. Yow ever joined and should be treated as a seperate thing entirely. Something that he himself has had to point out on many occaisons.
Ok, grandpa is done shaking his cane now and will now return to his rocker.

Yow's mic was nowhere to be seen, but I fully expected (and hoped) that he'd find it and bust into "You should see how she uses...." and give us a rendition of that ol' classic.
I think the note is an F# if my memory serves me well, and its on the E string. If they do this at the Montreal show, someone better run up on stage and start singing it or Ill play bass and Yow can sing or whatever. Otherwise thats a perfectly good waste of a song.

Yes, it's an F#. I remember this from Halloween a few years back, where my band turned into the JL for a night.

I saw Qui last night in Madison. It was my first exposure of any kind to the group besides hearing half of their cover of “Echoes” on the radio last week.
I am only lukewarm on it after one show. It was decent and fairly interesting, but my mind cannot untangle and help but compare it to the best live band ever, The Jesus Lizard. Matt’s guitar lines often reminded me Duane’s wonderful snakey style on the six string and the drummer seemed decent. I do really miss the propulsive, distorted bass that served as the backbone of the JL sound. And obviously the utter chaos and mayhem is down significantly on Yow’s part although he was still above average in terms of fronting a band. None of the songs struck me as bad, but by the same token nothing that was that memorable and made me want to buy the new record.
I don’t know, it is like one of those break-ups where you get out by saying “no honey, it’s not you, I got my own issues and that’s why it gone sour”. I will go see them if they return to my town and try not to get too hung up on the past greatness of Yow’s previous band. Currently I seem incapable of that sort of analysis due to the mind blowing power of Jesus Lizard shows I used to attend years ago.
In any case I did radio station ID’s with David and Matt before the show and they are good people.

77They're performing mere blocks from me as we speak, and I wanted to check them out but I've found myself too exhausted for a rock show tonight. Bah. Some rocker I am.

78Saw them at the Empty Bottle on Friday. Pretty awesome.
But man...you know, when I lived in Austin I used to play music with a crowd of people who were the sort of "creative""improvisational" musicians championed by Wire. A lot of them were dilletantes and displaced scenesters who wanted the stature of jazz musicians without possessing the discipline or craft of even the sloppiest rock musician.
Hey, some nights their schtick might actually work. But even when it does, it's a lot of drone that might or might not build up to anything. When it doesn't, it's just a fucking chore to be in the same room with it.
The other acts on the whole "Adventures in Modern Music" bill that night were an adventure in pretensious, avant garde tedium.
It just feels good to vent.
