as mentioned before...
it's all about The Vanishing.
(the original Dutch version, not the hollywood remake of course)
this movie is so cold.
it's really elegantly done -- no gore, no nudity, nothing too implausible or supernatural... it just patiently reels you along and then fucking drops it on you. it's one of those things where the more you think about it, the more it fucks with you. so cold.

72The Vanishing and Audition as many of you have said, are at the top of my list too.

I would love to hear you elaborate upon this theory, Andrew L.!

I've noticed a strong trend in 'western' horror films to go for mostly gore/violence and the occasional jump moment. I haven't been truly scared by one of these in a long time - probably since I was very young.
I'll second 'A Tale of Two Sisters' (and i'm starting to believe more and more 'eastern' films). I caught it one weekend and it freaked the absolute shit out of me. It's great because it does things i've never seen before. One of the best is when one of the girls is in bed with the sun shining through the windows, yet this gruesome ghost thing appears and proceeds to seriously mess things up. Totally busted the whole idea i've held for years (and I think others would agree) that if it's bright/you're under the covers, you're safe.
I've never seen anything like that being done before.

75boomp!
I wil add that the Exorcism of Emily Rose is actually quite scary in the "non-courtroom scene" parts. totally worth renting.
Devil's Backbone was also nice and creepy about a spanish orphanange.
let's have some more!

76when i was 6 i had a shattered elbow, bed ridden, grumpy, and entertained only by movies. mom and dad were running out of resources pretty quickly at the little videostore in town (video hut). not quite knowing what they were getting me into, they decide that the evil dead would be good entertainment for young broken me. holy crap, that was tramatic, i was almost crying when the undead were turning into blue oat meal and blowing up like exploding poo. that was some heavy action for a 6 year old. i saw gremlins at the movies, that scared me pretty well too. bad mom and dad for making me watch troll, the pit, puppet master, and evil dead when i was young and broken, girls just don't understand my love for this stuff!

Considering it contains scenes of real animal torture (as does Cannibal Holocaust), I hesitate recommending this one to people.

78Below is an underrated movie from David Twohy, creator/director of Pitch Black. It's a ghost story set on a WWII submarine, the occupants of which suspect they're being stalked by German ships. Darren Aranofksy wrote the screenplay, though with some uncredited revisions by Twohy.
So you get the claustrophobia and suspense of a submarine movie with the dread and "Boo!" factor of the ghost story. You couldn't have pulled dental floss out of my asshole with a pair of pliers for the entire second half of this movie.

79I haven't seen this film in years, but I remember seeing Ghost Story in the theatre when I was younger and was sufficiently creeped-out for the rest of the night. It stars Fred Astaire, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., and John Houseman.
This film is in no way scary, but if you can make it through the entire movie without turning it off because it's so bad, you'll be in for a treat. The Beast Within in the 70's boasted something along the effect that "we dare you to sit through the last fifteen minutes of this movie without screaming, covering your eyes, or running from the theater." This movie is so fucking bad, but, the transformation scene at the end makes it all worth it. So good.
I'm still supporting May. This is one fucked-up, disturbing, creepshow.
