The Heineken in the brown bottles is similarly bad, so I don't think there is a causation here. I'm told that the Heineken available IN Amsterdam is actually kind of palatable, but that wasn't one of the beers I had while staying there.

Tastes like piss and I recently discovered the reason was because they never clean the pipes.

Pub smells like piss too - it's one of the few places that would benefit from people being allowed to smoke in it again. Bizarrely it's main clientele are middle aged teachers and white collar men who you'd think would notice the extremely poor quality of the drink.

SKOL! I'm old enough to recall the cartoon Viking ad campaign in the 80s, slightly amazed you can still buy that, it's hideous. It's also made by Carlsberg-Tetley who are responsible for some of the vile potions mentioned by Chris above - I think I’m right in saying this but many of them are brewed at the plant in Burton and they're all more or less the same thing, just different "grades" and dilutions. Atrocious stuff, there's nothing worse than a pint of stinky, domestic cooking lager and there's plenty to choose from.

(In better news, I've had some beer good fortune this week – my pregnant and currently alcohol-avoidant girlfriend has won a case of beer from Adnams. On a whim she completed one of those tiebreaker phrases on a paper collar around the neck of a bottle in summer and we got a call this week. 48 bottles of something called Explorer will be waiting for me when I get home.)

Wow, you've denigrated a fine beer that I've greatly enjoyed on several occasions when I can get it here on the West Coast. Maybe you're not a fan of generously hopped ales. If you'd like something a bit more nuanced and food-friendly (I know you're all about the classic French cuisine) I'd suggest a nice Belgian Saison such as Saison Dupont, anything from Brasserie Fantôme or even Hennepin from Ommegang out of Cooperstown, NY. Also French Bière de Gardes such as Jenlain, 3 Monts or Brasserie La Choulette's Les Bière Des Sans Culottes pair nicely with a variety of dishes and cheeses. A nice American example would be Michigan's Jolly Pumpkin Oro de Calabaza if you don't mind a bit of tart sourness.

Are you from Atlanta or does Sweetwater get distributed outside of Georgia?

I live in Atlanta now, not sure if it gets outside of GA or not. I think so? I really like their Road Trip ale, just not 420.

Corona=donkey piss. My in-laws know I enjoy beer and on a recent trip to Mexico they e-mailed and said they were bringing me back some Mexican beer, when they got back and we went to their house it was fucking Corona. I felt like they had just shit in my Post Toasties.

That story brings a tear to my eye. Corona is so abysmally horrible. I'll drink it if it's at a party and free, but I've never understood how anyone with a sense of taste in beer would actively seek it out and pay for it.

My hatred of Point goes hand-in-hand with my hatred of the actual city of Stevens Point. I can actually taste the misery and the desperation in each bottle.

I do like the Spotted Cow. When I used to bartend in Green Bay, it was one of the beers on tap, so a couple of pints of that was often times my supper. That, or 2 Black and Tans. One night, I created the Black and Hamm's. It looked like the black oil from the X-Files was hanging in suspension above diluted piss.

I forgot to mention how much I dislike Heineken. It tastes like what I imagine fermented bong water must consist of.

See, I have fond memories of growing up up and around Stevens Point; Bills Pizza, Radio Kaos, seeing shitty punk shows at the Mission, Hot & Now. I didn't live in Point as an adult so perhaps my idea of it would change if I had.
