David-
I am not being an asshole...
or at least, not TRYING to be an asshole.
I just, uh... is this sort of thing done often? Where people send each other $500 or so worth of mics just to check them out?
The guy who runs the A room at Pigpen, where I record, has mentioned that he has had some Dragonflies to test for a while... I thought maybe the manufacturer had sent them but maybe it was another engineer somewhere.
That's an awfully generous offer you're making... I just don't know if my admittedly inexperienced ears would be able to do such a shootout justice.

I have about $500 worth of TheMilford's equipment right now.
He saw me last night and didn't even bring it up.
Not that I recommend or discourage that behavior.
TheMilford-
I am throwing down for these in about a month. You can fuck with them if you want.

Hi Patrick,
I listened to the track, it's overcompressed to my taste, but like you said, the band liked it. Anyhow, it sounds like the drums sound good, they're also a bit low in the mix so it's hard to really tell. but again, they sound good, even through my shitty computer speakers.
Maybe you can upload just the drums without any compression, or maybe just a stereo track of the two Fatheads.
By the way, you should trust your ears, you've been playing drums for long enough, you've been tuning drums for long enough and you've been listening to records long enough to tell if your recording sounds good. and it does.

Oh yeah! That reminds me... VOCKINS, WHERE ARE MY FUCKING MICS?!
I keed...
Have you had a chance to use them?
Anyway, I'm interested in what his comparison of the Fatheads vs. the Beyers would be... I trust that he wouldn't be a dick and steal them or if they blow he would have them fixed... as I would if I borrowed his mics...

I soloed the Fat Heads and knocked down a mix. I think that the actual level of the mix is kind of quiet. It didn't occur to me until I started to stream this on my laptop that I may have left the levels a little quiet.
It's available to stream.
You can hear the room is super live.
The singer is in the room. You can hear him a little bit, too.
They wanted to track in the same room, and I figured that if it helped them to keep their vibe intact, then a little vox bleed was a small thing to worry about.
I am really happy with the sound of these mics.
You're hearing a little bit of slap back off of the glass I think, since the ribbons are a figure eight pattern and the glass is right behind where they were. I should have moved things around more, but I was really happy with the sound of the drum room once I raised the ribbons nice and high.

I thought the Fat Heads sounded pretty good... you guys aren't doing that "If you don't have anything nice to say..." thing, are you?

I don't think it's fair to comment on the mics without a direct comparison or without being able to hear the room in real life. You could have told me you put up a pair of dynamics and I would probably believe you. I don't mean for that to sound dick-ish, but that's why I wouldn't comment.

yeah. seen that one too.
TG isn't hyper cardioid. It's the new ones which are hyper cardioid - TG-50X I think is the model name.
