a two-way split:

Susan vs. Youthclub / Janet vs. Johnny - Action (UK), 2002

I'm a sucker for any late-period greatness from prolific artists. It's so easy for young genius - try pulling out something incredible when you have thirty albums behind you. MES still (on occasion) does this, and it's thrilling when it happens.

Kick-ah! Kicker Conspiracy!
What a great song. It actually grooves a little.
Plus, it name checks George Best.

"High flair! Is punished-uh!"

Prole Art Threat is close behind.

-A

One of the great songs about football. I can't remember where I read it, but at the time Rough Trade weren't into the idea at all - "You lads are into football?"

One of the many black marks against Mark Smith's character is that he's a Dirty Red but still, great song.

I can't make any rational decision about this, so top ten it is. in no order.

1 frightened
2 psykick dance hall no. 2
3 fiery jack
4 the classical
5 wings
6 dr. buck's letter
7 new face in hell
8 c'n'c-s mithering
9 slates, slags, etc. or an older lover
10 fit and working again

Wings
Prole Art Threat
Roche Rumble

Together, these songs gave me happy hours of deciphering lyrics, and helped me understand the power of one good riff repeated again and again. What a band!

Thanks, by the way, to whomever it was that posted a link to the BBC documentary on Youtube a few months back. Link to part one here.

they also covered "I hate you" under the title "Black monk theme part 1" with modified lyrics (e.g. a lot of MES vitriol added to the original lyrics).
