Why the hell did it wear a boot? It's a worm! Worms can't wear boots! Come to think of it, it still kinda freaks me out a little.

Worms wear boots- you gotta, you gotta believe...

Oh...and include me in the cult of the Phantom Tollbooth. Loved that book. Yes, liked the band, too. As much as the book...um...the band, they could be a bit hookless and noodly at times. Their great moments were pretty fucking great, though. Valley of the Gwanji is fucking awesome...but, damn...I just think I liked the book better as a kid than I liked the band as an adolescent and then post-adolescent budding rock snob.

The Shel Silversties stuff too...

I remember reading a bunch of books about a character named Alvin Fernald (I might not have spelled his name right) and I thought he was fucking cool. He made me want to go out and do cool shit.

Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing and Superfudge, yeah...

Then there were the Childcraft annual books that I think may still be at my parent's house. Shit...I just oughta go back and live there.

A, 80-year-old nun read us this book when we were in like 6th grade:

When she told us it was written by Shel Silverstein, I immediately thought of his marijuana-themed spoken-word piece, "The Smoke-Off", which I'd heard a few weeks earlier on The Dr. Demento Show. I considered raising my hand, but just didn't have the heart to tell her about it.

I loved the Encyclopedia Brown and Choose Your Own Adventure books quite a bit.

I would probably still find this one funny:

My parents had some coffee table books that fascinated me as a kid: Our Universe, a book about ships, and this one by Reader's Digest:

A few months ago, we were visiting my father-in-law in Ohio, and much to my surprise, he had this very book on his shelf! I thumbed through it a bit and was surprised at how many of the pictures and stories about ghosts/paranormal stuff I remembered. I probably hadn't seen this book in 20 years. Obviously, it's pretty ticky-tacky Reader's Digest stuff, but it was pretty awesome for a 9- or 10-year-old boy.

Next time I visit, I may see if he'll pass it on for my son to read when he gets older.
