Obama s VP.

Jim Webb - not the Senator Jim Webb, the songwriter.

Would you like to ride in my beautiful balloon
Would you like to ride in my beautiful balloon
We could float among the stars together, you and I
For we can fly we can fly
Up, up and away
My beautiful, my beautiful balloon
The world's a nicer place in my beautiful balloon
It wears a nicer face in my beautiful balloon
We can sing a song and sail along the silver sky
For we can fly we can fly
Up, up and away
My beautiful, my beautiful balloon
Suspended under a twilight canopy
We'll search the clouds for a star to guide us
If by some chance you find yourself loving me
We'll find a cloud to hide us
We'll keep the moon beside us
Love is waiting there in my beautiful balloon
Way up in the air in my beautiful balloon
If you'll hold my hand we'll chase your dream across the sky
For we can fly we can fly
Up, up and away
My beautiful, my beautiful balloon
Balloon...
Up, up, and away.....

Winning ticket? Huge

Real Balls would be selecting Chuck Hagel. An anti-Iraq war moderate Republican, Vietnam Vet, with tons of foreign policy experience who completely de-fuzes McCain.

Chuck Hagel is pretty conservative, with no neo- involved.

Fiscally real tight. Anti-abortion, anti-gay rights.

He seems like a decent human being, but he's not going to be on a ticket with Obama. Odds-on favorite for sec'y of defense in any Obama white house.

Actually, Obama's already mentioned Hagel's name for possible Secretary of Defense. I'd say it's kind of a "lock."

After reading this and perusing youtube clips of Obama campaigning for Webb in 2006, I'm starting to think Webb was always the plan.

Webb would be a fine choice, although he could get nailed on experience and seems more likely than other VP candidates to make a big gaffe. Granted, I don't know much about Webb beyond his U.S. Senate years other than he's a Republican convert.

Check this out. Does it sound familiar, connor?

Now, Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) has a new book coming out that just might help him be Sen. Barack Obama's running mate.

According to the book jacket, A Time to Fight: Reclaiming a Fair and Just America "presents a clear-eyed, hard-hitting plan of attack for putting government to work for the people, rather than special interests, and for restoring the country's standing around the world."

Marc Ambinder notes the timing "is impeccable: right when Obama is starting to look around, ah, here's a guy who can go toe-to-toe with John McCain on national security, is beloved by white working class voters, puts Virginia into play instantly, and has a charming way with the media."

That's some Barackishness right there.

This is the critical thing. This is what is ultimately going to decide the VP nominee.

Let's look at the possibilities shall we?

Obama/Webb This is not going to happen. Too many possible puns about being trapped in the Web of Obama.

I like saying this one over and over.

My guess would be Carl Levin. The Dems need Michigan. Obama needs an elderly statesman to combat the inexperience argument. And he's white. HRC only uncovered the tip of the iceberg of racism in this country. Just wait until the GOP attack machine is in full swing. Those Willie Horton ads will seem quaint.

Oh, but I do like Tim Midgett's suggestion from a few pages back: Bill Bradley.

Haha...I don't think so, but I'm guessing he'll end up as Attorney General. It's a position Edwards has supposedly had his eye on for quite some time.

Everybody seems to think that Obama is going to pick a VP from a swing state that went blue in 2000 and 2004. Obama will win all the 2004 blue states (except perhaps for New Hampshire). To turn the tide, he needs to pick up a big red state that has been on the fence. If Obama picks up a VP strictly in the name of electoral votes, it'll likely be Ted Strickland. Evan Bayh or Bill Richardson would also win their respective 2004 red states for Obama, but their states don't have nearly the number of electoral votes Ohio does.

TAKE A SEAT

We're on the same page--some friends of mine and I were trying to think of celebrities who could round out the ticket, and George Clooney was the only one that seemed like he could deliver a constituency.

It would be hilarious. Who wouldn't want to vote for George Clooney? They'd get, like, 75% of the female vote.

I'll be surprised if it is Edwards. He could do worse (Geo. Clooney would be a little worse), but he could do better also (my man Bill Bradley, who doesn't stand a chance).
