Saying "you look great," this is a much different thing than "you have a great look."

Mr. Food,
This act is just needlessly shitty. Yeah you can do whatever you want, tell people to fuck off if you want, but you asked if it was rude and the answer is yes very much so. Being rude is not the worst thing in the world, and sometimes I find myself being needlessly rude to strangers. But it's always better to just nod and walk off. Even better is if you can take a compliment and say thanks.

Sometimes girls are really backhanded with this shit; a friend of mine's (ex)girlfriend said to me once, "It's so cool that you like don't wear makeup and like don't even care how you look"
She was partly right; I don't wear makeup. But I care how I look. We all do, even if we care so much less than almost everyone to make it basically like we don't care.

So I see what you're saying but let things go and everyone will be happier in general.

Considering where you were, your reaction was not out of line.
