There are lots of anonymous biz jazz groups that try to sound like them... but never come close.

the closest any band has come to sounding like Steely Dan was hearing Minutemen's cover of "Doctor Wu", and that's really saying something.

i met walter becker at a whole foods in new york. monumental. i talked to him about how it's apparently impossible to spend any time at music school and not come out liking steely dan, even if you didn't like music school.

Many years ago, I went to a used record shop and bought a copy of 'Half Machine Lip Moves' by Chrome on Siren. The guy at the counter told me that he thought it was what the aliens from John Carpenter's 'Starman' (i've never seen this, sorry) would sound like if they decided to form a rock band to 'fit in'. Surely they would sound more like Steely Dan though, no? I have a hunch, and that's all it is, apologies in advance if it causes anyone on this board to shit their tights, that a lot of Steely Dan haters would genuinely consider stuff like Wolf Eyes and Sun City Girls to be subversive.
Besides, it's really fucking hot right now. What else could be more perfect to listen to when it's really fucking hot?

The namechecking this band does is nauseating. It appeals to some kind of comic book store mentality - a series of in jokes designed to keep let everyone that owns the decoder ring into the secret Steely Dan Skull & Bones society. I could care less about Bard and that fucking train. Namechecking Charle Parker doesn't make the band any better. My rock-n-roll doesn't need a goddamn owner's manual. Steely Dan should namecheck Walgreens on the next record, since 99% of their audience associates "Reelin' In The Years" with getting a prescription filled or buying some paper towels.

CRAP, with the exception of the previously maligned "My Old School", which is great.

This band sits atop the shittiest bands who get 'props' of all time.
