Peavey Gear?

So one of my friends is learning to play bass, and another was moving for a job and offered to sell him his Peavey combo for like $40. Cool, says my friend - it beats his previous amp, which was taping a stethoscope to the body of the bass. He's out of town for a bit, so a third friend goes and picks up the amp for him and stashes it in our office.Turns out the amp, which I'd assumed would have been an apartment-friendly little thing, is actually a massive fuckoff 1x15 in an oversized cab that has to weigh over a hundred pounds. Got ugly carpet on the outside, parameter EQ, entirely too big.

Your friend should just experiment. If it doesn't work out, these are pretty great old Peavey bass practice amps that tend to be cheap.

It sounds like it might be similar to the Peavy TNT which was a pretty great bass combo amp. What you see as as a issue size and weight is pretty much the bass players standard problem. You need more watts and speaker to get something that can handle bass. So a bigger wattage 60-100 watt head and 15 inch speaker seems like big stage rig for a guitar player and heavy it is what I used for years as my home (small room gig) amp. Pick up a Ampeg B-15 which is great sounding but heavy as hell and not too loud. The TNTs were pretty great for small set up for jazz, rock or Bluze. These days there are a lot of better options for that very clear bass sound that is popular but the TNT give the traditional mids and bass you would use in a band. I am sure your friend will be happy.
