Best band in the history of the cosmos.
This sounds like what a Disney Pre-teen comedy/drama television show thinks Heavy Metal sounds like. Like, in the scene where Hannah Montana drinks too many Red Bulls at the battle of the bands and some older drummer is going to try to put his hand on her leg... this is what is playing in his van. This music is THAT edgy.
I don't think that song sounds good, but I do want to point out that scenario is basically a Lynch movie.

It came out at a pivotal moment for me and music, but I was already into harder more underground stuff by the time I heard their later albums and they had too much studio sheen for my tastes.

You aren't wrong. I think the metal tracks on The Real Thing are more authentic; "Surprise, You're Dead!" is a legit banger that I think also takes a cheeky jab at metal idioms that approach the "preteen comedy metal" you mentioned, and their cover of "War Pigs" is as good as the original.
Yes, musically, Surprise... sounds like straight up Bay Area thrash to me though the drumming may be a bit different from the norm (can't remember). Nothing next level or extraordinary but a perfectly fine example of the idiom. Predictably, it was the only song I dug on that album. I would have liked From out of Nowhere too if not for the horrendous "One minute here" bit. I remember Angel Dust had lots of those hideous bits too that just ruined otherwise decent songs... a bit of a trademark I guess...

Let's play pretend that you noise rock dorks wouldn't cream in your jeans if you saw this in a small club back in 95 and somebody told you the band were on T&G or Alternative Tentacles:

More people should be posting bangers from Sol Invictus . Seriously, if you liked anything by FNM during their original run, this shit grows on you. The album's more organic sounding--fewer 80s synths, more piano--and most of the songs do an excellent slow burn throughout that climax after 3 or 4 minutes in a locomotive chug running you over with awesomeness.

In your opinion which other FNM record is Sol Invictus most similar to?

Honestly? None!

Each one has its own personality, you know?* I suppose if I had to pick one, it would be King For a Day. But Sol is WAY better than KFAD, which honestly is my least favorite of the Patton records (although there are still a load of bangers on that album).

*Ok, Introduce Yourself and The Real Thing are very similar, but obviously the vocalist change is a significant jump

I have listened to every FNM video posted in this thread, including the above, and I hear (the beginnings of) nu metal, not The Jesus Lizard. This does not interest me.
