One of those two QSC CX502's works, the other doesn't seem to "Click on". Probably a PSU problem, probably an easy fix if there's any sense to it. Haven't cracked it open yet.

More e-waste today. Looks like it could come in handy. Whirlwind Pressmite:

DaveA wrote: Fri Feb 17, 2023 5:11 am Said earlier that I was good gear-wise, but nonetheless, am getting an absorption baffle today. My first. Am mildly excited to run it through some informal tests once I'm well rested.

In a nutshell, it's appealing, the idea of capturing mid-side "atmospherics" but also having the option of eliminating or at least dampening strumming sounds behind the mic if recording at more moderate volume levels. I like the potential too of using a longer than usual cord from the pedal board to the amp and placing the pedal board behind the baffle, such that the sound of switching effects on or off is less likely to get picked up.

These might be non-issues if I were tracking in a less cramped space/"proper studio"-type situation. We'll see how it all sounds. But the absorption baffle should have some sort of usefulness, I think.
Good sensible purchase
This turned out to be case, yes. Am tracking some shiz atm and used this for the first time the other night . . . Two speakers, a combo and cab. One mic'd with a ribbon, the other a dynamic. The one with the dynamic had an addition mid-side mic and having the baffle behind everything eliminated most of the unnecessary sounds behind it.

Was worried the overall sound would be too compressed, not airy enough, etc., but nah, the baffle checked out. And folded up, there's a spot for it behind a nearby couch so it's not too cumbersome when not in use.

Who-ahh!

DaveA! I was searching for your absorption baffle post after I had initially read it, but I couldn’t remember what it was called.

I need to start worrying about that stuff. Where did you order yours?

FYI, these are super easy to DIY with minimal tools. A screw gun, a stapler, small saw is about all you need (and you could probably nail or glue it together if you don't have a screw gun). Rockwool does well and is also almost fireproof/holds up to moisture.

llllllllllllllllllll, FM Garth is right that a baffle can be DIY'd without probably too much potential for calamity, but I got mine from Sweetwater. It's the 66inch tall ClearSonic Sorber baffle. About two hundred before tax/etc. They make shorter ones that are a bit less.

For "weekend warrior" shit, the guitar sounds pretty good.

Ordered a B&W ZZ8532 tweeter that finally popped up on ebay, so now all my Matrix 805's and HTM's will be complete!

After 25 years of being out-of-service, my Otari 8-track (MX5050 MkIII if you're interested) is back home w/ a clean bill of health. Despite the daunting costs and the fact that I am literally bereft of any ideas or material to record, I'm excited to get it running again and hoping it sparks some ideas/inspiration. I think Neal Young is quoted as saying there's at least one song in every new guitar or something like that so...

When I used it before, I was using it "motown style" which basically means I'd put tape on and go and whatever calibration it was set at is what I got on playback. These machines are apparently rock-solid and idiot-proof enough because I still listen back to some of the old work I did when I didn't know a goddam thing about recording and am very pleased with the results considering.

Anyway, this time around I'm hoping to do it the right way so I have an MRL tape on its way. If anyone was considering/needing an MRL, might wanna get your order in before Apr 1 as there's going to be a 15% price increase across the board.

Going to need an oscilloscope I guess so any guidance on that would be helpful.

Getting an organ emulator keyboard soon. Nothing like one of these or a Nord equivalent; much closer to a toy; but good enough under present circumstances.
