I have an EV 665 and it’s difficult to tell how close to the 666 it is. I played around with it a ton for vocals on one song, then ended up not picking it up again. I meant to try it out on bass and guitar more, but I’ve just been using other stuff.
Speaking of which, big ups to Cole Picks Vintage. Totally a great resource not only for repairs, but he’s got great demos AND the serviced mics he lists are totally fair prices. A lot of times he’ll sell his for hundreds less than some kind of dubious reverb listing.
He sells mics via the instagram merch drop sort of thing that can be maddening to navigate sometimes, but kudos to him for not taking advantage of hype and pricing everything sensibly. Plus, it seems like all our fav studios are sometimes clients of his.
Re: Gear: TALK ME OUT OF IT or JUSTIFY MY PURCHASE?
712I've had several of the chrome hammer EV mics and for the most part they are very similar. I had a 666 for a while and it was cool. No low end. Cool snare mic. My fave were the EV 674, little thin guys. No low end at all really. on my vocals it never needed any eq ever. They are pretty low output but if you eat them they are loud enough and they reject monitors completely. I had a box with a bunch of old EV mics that somehow were misplaced when I moved to Portland. They are all gone now aside from a broken 674 I cant seem to part with. They used to be so cheap, like $30-$50 and if you found them at a yard sale like $20. I miss them. I do still have a bunch of 635a's though. I like those stupid things.llllllllllllllllllll wrote: Sat Jul 20, 2024 7:47 pm I have an EV 665 and it’s difficult to tell how close to the 666 it is. Re: Gear: TALK ME OUT OF IT or JUSTIFY MY PURCHASE?
713Looking for a time alignment delay. Keep going back to getting an ams 16 500 series. My friend recommended a h3000 but also mad expensive. Why can’t i just get those eventide 500 series delay??
Re: Gear: TALK ME OUT OF IT or JUSTIFY MY PURCHASE?
714When I was traveling a lot doing live corporate sound stuff with analog boards I would ask constantly why nobody ever made a little DI sized box with stereo XLR in and out that just had a Digital LED display of numbers and an up and down button that was just a simple Digital Delay. For little satellite speaker, producer tables, overflow rooms etc. Never seen one, still would buy one. Now that Digital boards have delay at every hole it isn't that much of an issue, but it still pops up from time to time.bikefvcker wrote: Mon Jul 22, 2024 8:56 pm Looking for a time alignment delay. Analog tape emulators!
Wasn’t really planning any major purchases on gear outside of the odd splurge on amp or guitar maintenance or a pedal or something. But. These little analog tape guys have me thinking it would be cool to have a couple channels.
Not interested in saturation effects so much as having a channel at the end of the chain while tracking instruments and vocals and seeing what happens once I get to the mix stage. I’m thinking that the effect would be set subtly, but in a manner that stacks over the course of the song.
About $1500 is my doable max and only if it has a pretty great resale value since I would have to move a bunch of gear around to make room for it.

Re: Gear: TALK ME OUT OF IT or JUSTIFY MY PURCHASE?
718if you are recording in a DAW there are a million plugins that can do this pretty exact for a lot less than $1500. If I was looking for something subtitle I would just use a plugin. just my opinion. Kazrog True Iron or the UA tape emulators could probably get you there, and you would get to demo a bunch for free to see if it is what you want. On the other hand, I have a Teac 4 track reel to reel and Teac 2 Track reel to reel on either side of me within arms reach for doing this sort of thing so I get the "hardware rules" argument. DIYRE has a bunch of little 500 series kits that are affordable for this sort of thing that have made me curious, but i'm not really into 500 series.llllllllllllllllllll wrote: Fri Aug 09, 2024 11:24 am Analog tape emulators!

719Yeah, Airwindows has many things that do that. Try a few out (they're free but it's good to send the dude a few bucks if you like and use them) before buying or making room for anything.

There is an "I Ain't Looking At A Screen..." issue here.
That said?
Sometimes, you need to know when the "Gearspace..." buds are going to do better by you than the "PRF..." buds.

There's also this "SOS..." buds thread.

To me, the F.A.T.S.O. is noteworty(each of the processors can be used alone or in tandem...) but it also a good ways above the budget new..
