I've heard people talk about this like it is a classic Oscar-bait serious drama (and it even reenforced the faith of one Catholic commentator I read), but honestly this is Angels & Demons written by somebody who isn't a drooling imbecile. Just a great time, with superb climax involving a nun curtseying and an old Italian stereotype taking a drag on a vape. Plenty for Father Ted fans to relish.

The twist was far better than the silly one I thought was coming, and on reflection pretty smart (note to Dan Brown: please study this carefully as an example of everything your plots aren't).

28 days later

- pretty good, even tho I got to it 23 years later after release.

Good combination of zombie horror flick w thriller twists, dystopian gloom AND a few Godspeed songs to boot! (Which I wasn’t expecting) - worth yr time

Apparently there’s a sequel

2 of them - 28 Years Later is due to be released this year. Danny Boyle is directing this one too, and Cillian Murphy will be back, could be good.

News dropped today that the forthcoming third film is also part one of a trilogy with the middle one not being directed by Danny Boyle. Alex Garland is doing the scripts again though.

Apparently Boyle's proceeding as if the first sequel (28 Weeks Later) didn't happen and Murphy's only back in one of the later ones.

Caught up on a couple of things this weekend.

I can't blame Heretic for not having a good ending, since it's endemic in the genre. Up to that point it is great, and much smarter than expected.

Queer was unexpectedly straight to start with (given this is Burroughs) but eventually went properly peculiar. A good film, but nearly ruined by an absolutely terrible soundtrack. Like enduring a middle aged bore dropping in 'deep cuts' from Nirvana (because Cobain knew Burroughs? 🤷) and New Order (I've got no rationale there) to spoil your viewing pleasure. Still, a steady diet of tequila and heroin apparently keeps you buff so there's hope for us all.

Finally watched Tár.

Great. It was only after watching some reviews I realised there were scenes with ghosts in the background.

Blanchett was fantastic. Waffles, it did kind of peter out at the end and was about 20mins too long.

Automata was the most self-absorbed, boring, pretensious, dificciult to get through science fiction film I've seen since 'Mr. Nobody'. Absolutley horrendous on all fronts, specaculary bad with no redeemign qalities whatsoever.

We watched it the other night and enjoyed it immensely. I don't even know if it's "good" but the point was to be over the top and it delivered. The Margaret Qualley scenes reminded me of Spring Breakers.

Holy shit. I have seen this film at least four times now (and I have described it as haunting to friend), but I've not noticed the ghosts in the frames before. Clicks a few things into place for me. Thanks for that.
