I should give credit to the Mastery trem as it did vastly improve the tuning stability. I attributed a lot of that to the bridge (I could practically feel the wrapped strings dragging through the V shaped notches on the previous TOM bridge) but the trem has worked great too.

I vote for the AVRI trem (or whatever Fender calls the US made ones these days) because it has the lock. A lot of people don't use these but I think they are great when setup correctly. It's been forever since I played a show but it saved me during a string break on more than one occasion. You break a string and the tension change on the springs throw everything else out of tune. Avoided with engaging the lock. Also, avoid the MIJ trem. It sucks because of the lighter springs and it rocks unevenly.

Not really a tech question, but isn't weird how putting a new band together sometimes feels like dating?

I am talking with this guy about becoming the singer/guitarist in this new project and it's so weird how it mirrors dating. Every band I have ever been in has been just a bunch of friends, this time, total strangers.

It's similar as fuck. you are setting your self up to putting yourself in a room with a group of people, maybe multiple times a week, where you are going to be literally working through creations from your most emotional brain. It's close quarters. You need trust and camaraderie, and hopefully reciprocation. It's the same shit you want in a long term romantic relationship. I fuck EVERYONE I play music with. You should too.

oof yeah.. and with strangers it can be like being on a blind date that's going reasonably well until they casually mention growing up in Scientology or something..

I remember playing with this one guy in Rogers Park I met on CL a few times and things were going alright. After getting a little more comfortable with a few arrangements I started adding bolder fills to things. After one of those run throughs, he says to me "could you maybe not do that one fill, it sounds a little.. (said with disgust).. metal". 1. it really didn't, unless you're a total fucking baby and 2. yeah I realize we were going for a more art rock thing, but other influences and experiences accumulate over time and that's what gives us our unique voices. Let's not pretend like we came out of the womb with a copy of Trout Mask Replica..

So I never bothered with that dude again.

These are my greatest fears. Even people who look good on paper and can speak the same shorthand can just not gel in the same room for whatever reason. I am just getting REALLY in my own head about the whole thing. I have been just doing everything myself for so long and exposing these songs to *gasp* strangers feels very hard when in the past it never felt that way.

The healthiest thing from my point of view is to see it as a kind of bowling league or book club. If you don't want to be around the people it's a non starter. Obviously you want to feel they have some musical potential, but band activities should feel like an opportunity to spend time in a shared endeavor with great people.

Ambition can be good in measured doses but without camaraderie, nothing.

Absolutely agreed with all this here. I'm in the process of putting together a new band w/ the guitarist from my previous band and it's the first time we've ever really actively reached out to people to find additional bandmates. Really is a weird process that's like the worst parts of dating and being on someone's job interview loop.
