Not too long ago there was a lockdown here in NTX because a fucking parent showed up at their kids school strapped. Schools are supposed to be “gun free zones” but we also have state legalized open carry, so people with a hard dick for guns treat that as a license To just go anywhere they fucking want with their piece on their hip. It’s absolutely bananas.

Well, England dragged me back in with the excitement of their last few Tests (I know they hate the "Bazball" moniker, but it's probably here to stay) and Stokes stepping up as captain, so I was pretty excited for this series with South Africa and being able to get up early over the weekend to watch.

As it turns out, kinda underwhelming.

Ha! "Kinda underwhelming" is generous.

I dunno how relevant all the bazball stuff is to this defeat, though. They just failed with bat and ball, as they did a lot in the months and years before the new regime. The bowling was absolutely awful - wide half-volleys to the top-order batters, then short-pitched gimme's to the tail. Zero pressure. Then yet more failures by the openers, followed by more collapses. I don't think it was "excessive freedom" or "trying to express themselves" or whatever - I think they just had a collective 'mare.

Dealing with identity theft bullshit. Again.

I have all kinds of protective measures in place to make sure that accounts aren't fraudulently opened with my information - credit is locked, fraud alert in place, etc. - that are undermined by the fact that some banks don't even check your credit to open an account.

I'm so done with this crap.

Not a detail from today, but last Friday.

My friend Laura and I went for a walk on the Barton Creek Greenbelt. The creek was dry as a bone and it was relatively desolate, with only an occasional mountain biker passing by. Shortly before approaching what would normally be Sculpture Falls, we heard the trickle of water. We walked toward the sound and found a spring issuing from a seep on the side of a limestone cliff and purling along the rocks. Next to the spring was a naked lady reading a book. She said hello and told us that the water was fit to drink.

The whole thing felt very Homeric.
