Last night, went to my youngest daughter's second marching band performance at a high school football game.

Bleachers were really, really crowded. Even in my relatively average stature (6 feet tall), I could barely sit normally without touching folks around me.

A woman kept kneeing me in the back, which she probably couldn't help, but I just about went off on her and then just about had a panic attack.

COVID has fucked me up mentally more than physically.

From reading some of your other posts, it seems you work in the software/testing world? My first job out of school (which I left ~ 17 years ago) fell in this category.

There were several reasons why I quit that job, but thinking back on it... the job was so far removed from being useful to the ordinary person that I just wondered on an almost daily basis what the fuck I was doing there.

I have no idea if your situation is at all similar, but thought it was worth mentioning. Company mission and actually thinking you're making some sort of positive difference just by showing up at your job is underrated.

Yeah.. problem is there are only so many places like that. Sure, it might be awesome doing dev work for Bandcamp, but I'm sure there are 1,000 more qualified people who want that too. I'm pretty lucky that I can probably get another good paying job tomorrow, but it'd likely be in finance, insurance, health care, etc. If the people around me are nice and the work is interesting (code can be like solving puzzles), I could probably be content. It just comes down to a lot of the other BS, like sitting thru 4 hours of meetings of idiots shouting at each other, and looking around at the world literally being on fire, when I start to ask what the hell am I doing in life..

Could be worse: I have yet to have to take a job from a gun manufacturer, tobacco marketer, or Uline (all pitched to me at one point).

Yeah, that was probably the only reason why I stayed at that job for five years. I don't write code for my job now (I now look at other people's code and their software development process) and definitely miss it sometimes.

Certainly, the team surrounding you is extremely important. Meetings never go away in big corporations, and there are plenty of people at the company in which I work that probably hate their job primarily because there are one or two idiots in close proximity to them.
